Hi everyone,

There has been minimal response from members paying annual dues that were requested to be paid by January 1. Just a reminder....maybe something you meant to do but at the bottom of your list?  After Christmas budgets can be sticky for sure.

We'd like to call an annual meeting of all NMSA members for Sunday January 30 in Albuquerque.  I'm thinking of the Macaroni Grill.  Had originally thought about this weekend but have dragged my feet so long that there isn't much time to make plans.  Please respond to this note and let your officers know your thoughts on:

1) your interest in continuing NMSA as an organization
2) whether you will attend the annual meeting and which of the two Sundays you prefer.  It will be a mid day meeting, with plenty of time to shop/travel before and after

There is no Sunday, January 30 on my calendar!  Either the 22nd or the

29th will work for me - subject to Mother Nature's whims and what she has planned for I-25 between here and Albuquerque.

OOPS,things got pushy and didn’t get my dues mailed.  Which one is it, $l5 or $20??as there was two different mailings.  Anyway count me in as a member and you will get the dues soon.  As far as I can see whats the use of having shows if there is no one to help out.  I’m for continuing and working hard to see that we as NMSA do  a good job. For those that don’t know, I HAVE A NEW CARDI PUPPY. He is 6 months and is a very nice sable.  Anyway if he doesn’t make it in the show ring he will be loved  and perhaps trained on obedience.

My surgery was pushed back a week so I will be on my way to ABQ on the 22nd so definitely not able to be there at mid day.  Then they have made a big deal of this surgery so I will likely still be in the hospital on the 29th.  Therefore I guess you have to count me out of either of those days for the meeting.  I just like to steward.  Would hate to see such a long time organization pass away but if people are not interested in doing the job it is very hard.

I am interested in continuing the club.

I forgot to pay my dues.  Can you please post Kathy's address again.  I think that is where it is to be sent.  .............??

I will not be attending any meetings, because I am too far away.

Don't know if I can be there.  I'm still in Topeka with family.  My sis is dying of cancer; it will happen soon, but can't say when.  IF I can be there Jan. 30, I'll sure try to be on hand.  Wish I could be more certain, but.....

I just had a thought..............instead of mailing a check for dues............what about accepting dues via Paypal?  We can send them to Kathleen as "Friends and Family".  No charge to sender, as long as the payment is not connected with a credit card.  No charge to the club, as long as it is sent Friends and Family.  The club can have a verified account linked to a bank account and when the membership is paid, Kathleen simply "transfers" the membership dues to the bank account.  Super simple........fast.........and more likely to get dues paid in a timely manner, I think.

I'd like to continue to steward, and be a member...

I won't be able to be at the meeing, Phyllis.  I'm still here in Topeka, and we still don't know when I can plan to come home.  Honestly, watching all the club members of NMSA with both their physical problems, their personality clashes, and how things have been playing out in the past year or so, I don't think this Club can continue.  We simply can't seem to find a young enough and healthy enough group to properly staff a show any more let alone a 4-day or so show.  It's a constant struggle to find enough stewards to do anything for obedience, and when obedience is offered, that's where I want to be, which means at least half the time I'm not around for conformation classes.  I love stewarding, but when we get complaints because we can't cover a ring decently, I think it's time to let the shows do their own coverage.  I DO want to watch greyhounds, and most of the time, when I'm stewarding I can't get loose for even that limited amount of time.  I don't get to see my breed because when I work for the Club, my time is for the club.  I believe that most of our younger members don't seem to have that dedication, no criticism just my observation.  It's that way in most activities of any kind these days.

Another question is how many ACTIVE members are actually out there stewarding.  Shows have gotten more and more complicated which means we need to have some stewarding classes for the variety of classes which have been constantly added in both obed. and conf.  How many stewards do we have are simply under age 60?  Think about it; all dog activities are having a hard time finding new, younger members.  I believe that shows, like many other live animal activities are dying.  People don't have the commitment to long term sports; they'd rather watch tv or video games and such.  That's just the way of a changing world.

I'm sorry if I sound like a wet blanket, but I think we need to take a hard look at dog shows and trials in general.  Dog SPORTS/GAMES/ACTIVITIES are fairly popular because AKC has started throwing in more and more of them and opening them to mixed breeds.  I know they say its because it will cause those new folks to get "real" breeds, but I don't think its happening.  AKC needs more $$ to keep alive, and only by accessing  a 'new' population can they do so.

After thinking this over for a couple months--without any 'dog person' input since I'm up here in Topeka and not in contact with many dog folks, I hate to say it, but I think it's time for NMSA to fold its tents and let the individual clubs all over NM and the neighboring states take over.  If this is brought up as a vote at the annual meeting, my vote is to disband  the club much as it hurts me to do so.  I can't travel as easily as I used to, and I know that several of our most active members are in the same boat.  If the younger members can't or won't actually take over and run things, it's time to say farewell.

But Donna, when you are working, you cannot do much mixing and mingling if you paying attention to the ring and your judge and doing a good job.  Jogging off to mix and mingle just isn't possible when there is just one of you at the ring.  Yes, you can talk to some of the folks immediately around the ring if you aren't busy, but that isn't possible if you are busy, and with often one steward, it can be hectic.  If you want to work for that club and steward, I'm sure you'd always be welcome.  I enjoy stewarding too, but not when I feel like I've been run over by a steam roller at the end of the day and didn't even get to talk to the hound people.

Laurel, I have a thought........don't know if you have tried it, or if it is currently possible..........but, what about having the person scheduling the stewards, schedule you so that you could at least go watch the hound breed most important to you?  In my case, being I show Shar-Pei, I get time scheduled to go show my dogs and then I go back to my stewarding ring.  I really enjoy watching the various breeds and meeting new people of various breeds.

We try to do that though, Bonnie. Obviously you can't steward a ring you'd be showing in later and in one, two or three days later.  We just had that issue back in May at the Albuquerque shows.  Truth be told there are simply not enough of us to cover the rings adequately. I hate NMSA to not be "all we can be", but realistically, no. Nevertheless, it will be up to the membership going forward.

Phyllis, I don't understand why it wouldn't work for Laurel to view one hound breed of her choice during each day?  If she were exhibiting, she would still be able to steward.............  Yes, it may take a bit more work to work out a schedule, but being the chief steward for the Southern Colorado shows, I juggle ring schedules to accommodate all of my stewards.  So, to me, it seems doable.....

Not sure what I can say here. There would be no problem in doing that IF we had ample coverage to do a decent job. In Roswell, we had four rings. We had 5 stewards, at least 2 of whom were also grooming and showing, so not a lot of time for anyone to step away for potty breaks or to ex their dogs.  Twenty years ago, NMSA was a big, successful organization.  We could easily allow people to watch rings and care for their dogs. With dwindling membership and some with declining health we aren't that any more.   I just hate to see an organization that had so much pride at one time looking bad.

There are several things that have led to the predicament we are in with NMSA. A lot of us (me included) are getting to old and in bad health to do any more than table steward.  Those of us who are left are reluctant to suggest to anybody else to join us because of the bickering, backbiting and lack of training that has lifted it's ugly head recently.  It's too bad because as someone on the other end (hiring stewards now being show Chair) I am really sorry it has come to this.  The stewards club makes the show what it is.  It's so much easier on the chair to have it there.  I don't think there is any need for 2 stewards per ring (I'm talking about conformation only).  The 2nd person would go as a trainee and work the table.  Those of us who have been stewarding for awhile can very easily handle a ring by themselves.  I notice Palm Springs only have one per ring as other shows.  Frankly I would rather handle it alone anyway.  You get in a rhythm and it goes so much better.  If it is to continue (and I hope it does) things have to change in the way it is handled and will require a lot of work on all of us to get more recruts  to handle the rings adequately.  I'm not talking about obedience because they have been known to step up and help out when needed. See you on Sunday.

Hello,

I signed up as a new member who is well under 60 yrs old last year to help out at the May shows.  I will say that my experience was less than ideal.  I was assigned a couple of different rings where I was to be "trained".  I have never been a ring steward before but have been an exhibitor.  I knew there was much to learn and was excited and happy to be there and to do so.  I will say that I was made to feel unwelcome and in the way.  It was uncomfortable because the ladies were not even pretending to be nice to me, let alone having any interest in training someone new. I was made to feel like I was a competitor of them somehow. Being a professional outside of dog shows, I think I have pretty thick skin but I will say I was surprised at the level of disdain I was treated with.  I also did hear stewards talking about others in an unflattering way which I guess is normal since it is mentioned several times in the posts below. It didn't seem they wanted to be there as they were short with exhibitors who had questions or needed help in some way.(with the exception of Linda, Phyllis and Kathy who were nice and helpful to me)
Silly me, as I thought that is what ring stewards did, make exhibitors and others feel welcome and help them at our shows.  Unfortunately it truly was not the case from my experience. As an exhibitor in a breed with many entries, classes and sometimes confusion I will say that having nice and professional stewards has made for a good show experience in the past.

I am aware I am a complete nobody in your group and have no bones to pick as I am not that way and don't know any of you well enough to have issues.  If your group is to survive, you do need new and younger blood who can walk unhindered and without mechanical help that apparently seemed to scare some of the dogs. People who genuinely want to be there who smile and are nice and pleasant to their fellow stewards, exhibitors, club members and judges is what is standard and expected by the clubs hiring stewards These new people do need to be trained by friendly members who want us there so we can learn to competently run a ring by ourselves. It seems looking from the outside in that some of your folks don't want to welcome new member trainees or take the time to make one feel welcome or to show common courtesy. Possibly something to consider and to discuss openly at your next meeting.

I guess it is up to the seasoned members to decide what is right for the club moving forward.
With regards,
Jani Klatt

I have so thoroughly enjoyed stewarding these last few years.  I know that there are some the wish the club or association to fold up; not me.  However, I would like to respond to the new people that were treated poorly.  I am sorry that this happened to you.  I do think we need to take time to train the newbies. If possible could we actually hold a few formal classes.  It would not be hard to work away from the shows to help people learn how to do the job.  I would be willing to help out.  I am sure there are more of us out there that feel willing to help keep this group healthy and growing.  It is not hard just detailed.  It is not hard but the steward makes or breaks the quality of the ring experience both for the judge as well as exhibitors.  I do not like this backbiting and gossiping.  I am sure I have done my share but am trying hard to be better.  If we just step back and give this next year a chance and if there is still the feeling that there is no way to continue then it is time to rethink.  But for now I hope all of us that want to continue step up and do a better job.  Kathy Powell

Jani, I hope your experience won't  turn you off about joining us at the shows.  This is what I meant about the backstabbing and distain that some of our members show new people.  If the organization is to continue then that has to stop right now.  There is no place in the scheme of things for that to keep up.

Wow, I had no idea this was going on.  Of course, I have only worked with the club in May, so I guess I have just been in my own world.  I generally steward alone.

Jan, I thoroughly enjoy ring stewarding and I apologize if I did not recognize, help or encourage you.  I am sure I would have seen you, but being I only steward in Albuquerque, I don't know all of the club members, I probably thought you were a long time member.  I live in Colorado, so don't do all of the NM shows.  Please hang in there, if the club continues..............and I hope that it does.

Laurel is right. When you're working, you cannot do much mingling. When my ring relief is late for whatever reason, it causes me to rush & tense up, hurting my dog's performance in the ring.

I really enjoy stewarding. I enjoy watching the dogs & the judge. I've learned a lot from the experience. However, that being said, my primary reason for going to shows is to show my dogs and interact with my dogs. More than half the time, I cannot even void them prior to going into the ring. I have to leave them alone, subject to the whims of strangers. And, the other year, as I was leaving the auxiliary bldg, I heard the cry, "LOOSE DOG!"  I looked up and it was my veteran greyhound, Banner, running down main street in the fairgrounds!  Thank God he has a great recall! No idea how he got out of his crate.

BTW, I'm a piss poor teacher and am much better off by myself.

Elaine

In my own defense, I have never left the ring while it was running, even to go to the bathroom, let alone mingling. The word MINGLING, is to be with people with the same likes I do,  DOGS.  Sorry for this but I was a bit put off with this.  Please know the person and how they respect themselves and the job they do. this very thing is why we can't get and keep new younger people . not wishing to fall into this type of belittlement I think I've said more than I should .  Just, please know the person  and how they treat all the jobs they are assigned before insulting them over one word that means different things to different people.  Donna Miller

Subject: Annual Meeting

It will be a mid day meeting, with plenty of time to shop/travel before and after
.

We all need to step back and take a look at ourselves.  Think about the purpose of New Mexico Stewards Association.  Anyone remember the words, "we baby our judges". It's in our ad that goes into the show catalogs.

It's nice to be paid, and get lunch and parking and all the perks, but....Is that what NMSA wants to be known for? Or is it a happy club and happy judges?  I can tell you without a doubt that many of the smaller clubs (mine included) are hard pressed to afford us and likely will not for 2017.  I'm not saying this applies to everyone, we have several members who are very professional, but the overall impression of NMSA now is not good.

This is what I am trying to tell you, guys.  I love to steward, and I'd hate to see us go down the tubes, but otoh, please understand that reputation is earned.

See you Sunday.
