Hello All,

I've been meeting recently with a few folks about putting together an
independent media group, pooling our resources, sharing knowledge and
opportunities. Michael Poley (Orlando Event TV, www.oetv.tv, Night of
the Nightwolf, www.notnw.com) and Eric Palm (www.ericpalm.net) and a
few others are interested in producing journalistic content - whether
you call these videoblogs, video podcasts, IPTV news, or short
documentaries - we want to make these, and make them entertaining and
engaging.

I realized at some point that making these in our free time takes a
lot of time, so we should focus on the story, not the production value
- making pieces in a very lightweight, agile manner - which means we
can release videos more often, and in a timely fashion.

I'd like to propose we get together on a semi-regular basis to share -
our recent work, lessons learned, opportunities, resources, etc. It
would be part show-and-tell, part social time, part educational, and
also hook up mentors and mentees - those who are looking to learn by
example.

A great place to have this discussion in the near future is
BarCampOrlando:

It's downtown, 2 weeks from now, and the schedule is open to discuss
whatever we want. There will also be 400+ passionate, intelligent,
switched-on folks there looking to share.

BarCamp is Free!

Saturday, April 3rd, 9AM - 6PM
Slingapour's
18 Wall Street, Orlando, FL 32801

Another place to have the discussion is on this list, but I also know
of a few existing groups we may be able to usurp:

Orlando Film Professionals Meetup Group
http://www.meetup.com/filmorlando/
The Orlando Film Industry Professionals Group is a network of behind-
the-scenes professionals involved in the film industry. In the past
two years we have built up a solid network of film professionals here
in Central Florida, and we continue to grow as we meet new peers in
the industry. We meet once a month to exchange ideas, talk shop, and
network with peers, all while having fun.

INVOLV
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=183556251884
Based in Orlando, INVOLV is a community of media-makers who gather to
connect and support one another. ---- The idea of this group is that
we are all people up to something in media and communication. We have
goals for our careers and lives. And as we involve each other in what
we’re up to, we get their faster and easier, or we end up somewhere
even better.

*******

Neither of these groups has posted their next meetup yet, but keep an
eye out.

Now that BlogOrlando has gone the way of the dodo, Orlando will be
missing the general social media / new media-type event that we once
had. This group may be able to fill the gaps.

Michael, Eric and I have also discussed holding a "videoblogging week"
or some similar event. Think of it like National Novel Writing Month,
but with video.

There are more ideas I'm sure, but this is enough to get going.

Peace,
Ryan Price

This past weekend was BarCampOrlando 2010. If you missed it, I'm very
sorry you did. Make sure you watch April 2011 for next year's event.

During BarCamp, Matt Sokolof, Michael Poley and I hosted a discussion
out on the patio about Local News. A few folks were very active
contributors, like Brenda Young from Tampa, Kieth Barret from Disney,
and Daniel Jaye, who now works for a company called Ad Summons, and is
Matt's boss.

I brought up the idea of having a local news producers meetup there,
and we all had some good discussions about projects we'd like to start
or finish.

Someone said "when is the meetup"? I said pick a date, and a place,
we'll organize it.

Here is the date: Sunday, May 9th, 3PM. Eden Bar @ Enzian Theatre,
Maitland.

Just before at 1PM is the monthly Enzian FilmSlam, which is a $5 local
showcase of independent short film.

Discuss.

I just realized that Sunday May 9th is Mother's Day.

Can I suggest Tuesday, May 11th? Say, Stardust Video and Coffee?
6:30PM?

Peace,
Ryan

Tuesday May 11th works for me. I would love to meet up with interested
parties and further discuss the issue of 'local media'
