Hello all,

Thank to all who came to last week's event at the WGA, it was great to see you all again! Video of the event is now available on the NMI blog at http://newmediainterchange.com.

The WGA event really energized me to do some more work to help people start using their equipment and talent to produce content.

For the next NMI workshop/meeting, I am thinking of making it more of a hands-on workshop. It would have fewer (if any) full presentations, but instead be more of a co-working environment where you could bring your computer and your equipment and we could help each other learn how to use it.

Taking an example from my former art coach at Walt Disney imagineering, we would meet up foe "studio time" and then I (and others) would circulate through the group, answering questions, helping with configurations, etc. I could then use your setup questions to give quick demos to everyone about that particular hardware, software, microphone, camera, etc.

This could also turn into a full-fledged MediaCampLA if we wish -- a 1-2 day unconference dedicated to New Media.

Here are a few questions for you...

* Does this sounds interesting to you? What would you like to see in a workshop like this? How would you make it better?
* Do you know of any locations with wifi, etc where we could hold such an event?
Would you be up for a road trip to immerse yourself in New Media for a day? There is a retreat location in Ojai that might be willing to host us
There is also a rehearsal studio in Burbank that might be available for a small fee.
Could you contribute to the rental costs? Something like $5 per person?
* Would a weeknight or weekend be better for you?
* What would you like to see covered?
Cameras, audio, audio and video editing, working with online video sharing sites, etc?
    Promotion, Marketing, Monetization

I'd love to hear your ideas. I have set up a forum discussion group on the NMI Community site so we can talk about this idea and others. You can find it at http://newmediainterchange.ning.com/forum/topics/nmi-workshops-and-mediacampla

Additionally, do you belong to a group that would be interest in a workshop like "From Camera to YouTube" and interested in hosting NMI for a meeting? Drop me a line at in...@newmediainterchange.com and let me know who I should contact.

I like the idea and want to play. Please do it after July 4th. One day is fine. Clarify the goals and help people get those goals accomplished.

Also keep it simple for the first one. MediaCamp can come later. Under commit and over deliver. 8-)

I know the manager of the Panera Bread in Santa Clarita and she would be open to this. They have indoor and patio wifi. I imagine other Panera locations would be the same, but they would hope you would at least buy a coffee.

A rehearsal studio would be great if there is adequate parking.

I would like for everyone to bring a script (5-10 mins of copy), record it, edit it, re-sample it for posting, post it, view it, then link it to a web page or many sites. Would be nice to have a spot well lit with a bit a scenery  for the shoot, and even some make up to make the clip worth using.

Not so much about buying a camera (that is a whole day's session), but setting it up for the shoot: supplies and cords needed, white balancing, focus, test recordings, media, etc.

If you want to be daring, you can add how to put in titles, captions, narration, presentations stills.  Should use opensource or shareware tools we can all use.

Week night is possible, but weekend would be more relaxing.

Do you have any more info on ReInvent Camp?  so excited!

I signed up for Presentation Camp to be a sponsor so I can bring my little seedlings...tee hee.

How are you?  I'm working on getting you some blog posts, coming up with a concept for a small series, I'll try to have you something by early next week.

See you tomorrow night at Blob Live?

Here are a few questions for you...

* Does this sounds interesting to you? What would you like to see in a workshop like this? How would you make it better? Great idea. Try to keep it small and have multiple events so it doesn't get unwieldy and everyone gets 1-1 time.
* Do you know of any locations with wifi, etc where we could hold such an event? small rest/cafe on westside that has wifi and promise everyone would order something. they could use footage?
park (west la or bh) or sanata monica beach? hermosa has free wifi for the whole city, not sure but think tower location is on pier by police station
Would you be up for a road trip to immerse yourself in New Media for a day? There is a retreat location in Ojai that might be willing to host us depends on cost/time & when it is
There is also a rehearsal studio in Burbank that might be available for a small fee.
Could you contribute to the rental costs? Something like $5 per person? yes.
* Would a weeknight or weekend be better for you? for a multi-hour hands-ons class, think weeked is much better. maybe do two classes, one in am, one in pm - you could stay put and it keeps clas size down and after 2-3 hrs and i think that'll be plenty for 1 group
* What would you like to see covered?
Cameras, audio, audio and video editing, working with online video sharing sites, etc?
Promotion, Marketing, Monetization it would be great to do small classes focusing on 1 (max 2 if related) subject(s).

I think there's a very good opportunity to collaborate with some complimentary learning and training efforts on the technology side. Specifically, I'm talking about the Open Media Project:
http://groups.drupal.org/open-media-project
http://www.pbs.org/idealab/tony_shawcross_1/

I've been talking with them about about essentially replicating their model on a regional level to provide powerful tools to empower content creators (http://groups.drupal.org/node/22619) and also producing a regular set of sessions and workshops along the lines of their Open Media Camp (http://openmediacamp.org/).

As it seems to be a good compliment to New Media Interchange, possibly there's an opportunity to collaborate with the Open Media folks and other media and tech groups on the local level?

Best,
Gus

Sounds good to me, a weekend would be fine - wherever, but I can also do during the week.  I like the idea of "hands on" workshop even though I use a Mac desktop for editing that would be hard to bring, I could bring a PC laptop and try to learn on that with a different program.  Doesn't hurt to learn on both.

I would be happy to contribute to the cost.

Regards,
Alice
