NEW HANOVER – Just before 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Deputies responded to 101 South Branch Road to investigate a reported death. Upon arrival Deputies found the body of Carmine Anthony Bruno, 68, deceased in the garage.
As Detectives began their investigation they learned that Carmine Bruno was assaulted multiple times with a baseball bat on Tuesday, January 5th. Dennis Benjamin Roy, a tenant of the Bruno’s, assaulted Mr. Bruno while he was sleeping and in the presence of his wife, Mary Bruno. The assault occurred shortly after Dennis returned home, upset over Carmine being verbally abusive towards Mary in the past.
Following the assault, Dennis ordered Mary to her room and threatened to harm her if she came out. She was also given an unknown medication which has kept her in an incoherent state for the past two days.
This evening, Mary Bruno contacted her brother and advised him of the incident. The brother placed the 911 call while responding to the aid of his sister.
Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators remained on-scene overnight as they executed a search warrant and processed the crime scene.
Dennis Benjamin Roy, 55, of 101 South Branch Road was located and questioned by Detectives where he later confessed to the murder of Carmine Bruno. Roy, charged with First Degree Murder, is being held at the New Hanover County Detention Facility without bond, pending a first appearance later today.
