Sheriff McMahon Encourages Motorists to Exercise Caution

Freezing Rain Advisory Issued for New Hanover County

NEW HANOVER – As the National Weather Service continues the Freezing Rain Advisory for New Hanover County, Sheriff Ed McMahon and his staff are closely monitoring the weather and are ready to respond to potentially hazardous conditions that are possible later this evening.

Sheriff McMahon encourages citizens and visitors of New Hanover County to stay alert to changing conditions and exercise extreme caution, “This type of weather is rare in New Hanover County, “said Sheriff McMahon.  “It’s important to be aware of the hazards that exist and be prepared.

If you must travel, you should take the following precautions:

·         Reduce your speed.  Driving at the regular speed limit with reduce your ability to control the car if you begin to slide.

·         Leave plenty of room between you and the other vehicles.

·         Bridges and overpasses accumulate ice first.  Approach them with extreme caution and do not apply your brakes while on the bridge.

·         If you do begin to slide, take your foot off the gas and turn the steering wheel in the direction of the slide.  Do not apply the brakes as that will cause further loss of control of the car.

New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office will continue to utilize Twitter, Nixle and NHSO Alerts to inform the public as Deputies monitor the roadways within our communities this evening.
