Round Two of Trees for Schools is Officially Open! $4.5M in RGGI-Funded Grants Available

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, in partnership with The College of New Jersey and Sustainable Jersey, has announced the availability of $4.5 million in grants for tree plantings at New Jersey public school districts, county colleges, and state colleges and universities through the Trees for Schools grant program. The funds for this initiative are made available through New Jersey's participation in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative.

This is the second cycle of Trees for Schools grants. Launched in 2023, the first cycle resulted in the planting of nearly three thousand trees at thirty-three educational institutions across the state.

Tree Planting

The program will award competitive grants ranging from $10,000 to $250,000 to fund the tree plantings and cover costs associated with planning, site preparation, tree purchases, planting, watering, monitoring, and maintenance over a three-year period. Schools located in overburdened communities seeking to expand their tree canopy are encouraged to apply.

Those interested can review the grant application and apply at bit.ly/TreesforSchools. Previous recipients of Trees for Schools grants are ineligible.

Applications are due Tuesday, May 13 for spring 2026 plantings.

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection is dedicated to protecting New Jersey’s environment and public health. The agency prioritizes addressing climate change, protecting New Jersey’s water, revitalizing its communities and managing and promoting its natural and historic resources.
