INTERNATIONAL TRACK AND FIELD COMPETITION IN RACE WALKING
COMES TO BOSTON ON AUGUST 4
USA vs. Canada Junior Race Walk Match to Take Place at East Boston Park
Boston MA, August, 2013 – USA Track & Field, the national governing body of the sport, will host the 25th USA vs. Canada Junior Race Walk Match at 9 a.m., on Sunday, August 4, at East Boston Park. The competition is a scoring match between the two countries for athletes age 19 and under.
First held in 1989, the location alternates between USA and Canadian sites; 2013 will be the second time for the match to be held in New England. The match is also the longest continuously contested international dual match, in any track and field discipline for both countries.
Race walking is an Olympic event within athletics (track and field), and part of the International Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF) World Championships in the Open, Junior, and Youth age groups. There are also stand-alone race walk competitions including national team based World Cup and Pan American Cup meets.
Juniors are at least age 14 on the day of competition, and do not turn 20 during the calendar year. This match is often the first time in their career that an athlete will compete for Team USA or Team Canada. Competitors from both countries have competed in as high a level as the World Championships and Olympic Games, including six Olympians.
Each team may enter up to 6 team members, with the top 3 finishers from each country figuring in the scoring. The USA team will selected, in part, based on finish place at the USA Track & Field Championship meet recently held in Eugene, Oregon on June, 2013. Canada's team was picked from their national meet. Additional athletes will compete as non-scorers to fill out a better competitive field.
The competitors will cover multiple circuits of a paved 1+ kilometer loop around East Boston Stadium and adjacent fields, affording excellent spectator visibility. Women will race 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) and men will cover 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), about 5 and 10 laps, respectively. There will also be novice/open/youth races of 1 or 3 kilometers. Past Team USA members will also be in attendance.
Local organizers are USA Track & Field - New England - based in Brighton - and the New England Walkers Race Walk Club. Certified officials will judge, count laps, and time the competitors.
