Dear John,
Late last week, in a political stunt that defies Pope Francis, San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone banned Speaker Nancy Pelosi from receiving Communion in her home diocese due to her pro-choice politics.
In a statement, Archbishop Cordileone claimed that Speaker Pelosi "explicitly set[s] herself in opposition to Pope Francis," with her stance on abortion. The truth, which Archbishop Cordileone surely knows, is that he is the one explicitly opposed to Pope Francis, who has famously never denied Communion to anyone.
To date, more than 50,000 Faithful America members have called on the U.S. Catholic bishops to stop weaponizing Communion. The bishops finally listened when they backed off of an attempt to deny the sacrament to President Biden last fall. The facts are clear: Archbishop Cordileone has gone rogue.
It's time to speak out once more, and make it clear to Archbishop Cordileone that a majority of grassroots Catholics and fellow Christians do not want to see our faithful worship turned into a political tool.
Tell Archbishop Cordileone: Give Communion to Speaker Pelosi >>
It couldn't be more clear that this is a political stunt from Archbishop Cordileone, who is defying Pope Francis and choosing partisanship over his pastoral duty.
Speaker Pelosi's pro-choice politics are not new. The archbishop could have made this decision at any point since becoming archbishop ten years ago, but waited until the likely reversal of Roe v. Wade is dominating the headlines.
Moreover, a conservative organization founded by Archbishop Cordileone -- the Benedict XVI Institute -- is even using the archbishop's weaponization of worship to fundraise and grow its email list. The Institute has become known for receiving funding from the same donors that helped fund the January 6 insurrection.
The archbishop can try to shield himself from criticism by citing the pope all he wants, but it is Pope Francis who called on bishops to be pastoral rather than partisan, and it is Pope Francis who has said, "The Eucharist is not the reward of saints but the bread of sinners."
(To put even more pressure on Archbishop Cordileone to do the right thing, this petition is a joint action with our friends at Faith in Public Life's Catholic Program.)
Thank you for everything you do to love your neighbor and make Christ accessible to everyone!
In peace,
- Rev. Nathan, Karli, and the Faithful America team
