US refineries stepped up to fill some of the worldwide shortage of jet fuel, but

... the refineries were already working as hard as they could, so, they had to cut output of another product so they could increase the output of jet fuel.

They cut gasoline.  So with demand more or less constant, and supply shrinking, wholesale prices went up, and of course price at the pump increased.
