🎭✨ New Yorkers, it’s happening THIS WEEKEND to celebrate NYC’s 400th anniversary! You’re not going to want to miss all the excitement on Sunday in the heart of Times Square. Read on to get all the details and get an overview of how we delivered for you this week.

New Yorkers, hello from City Hall!

Summer isn’t officially over yet, but the seasons are undoubtedly changing. The air is crisper, our students are back in class, and beautiful fall foliage is just around the corner. But even as the seasons start to shift, our commitment to delivering for you remains the same. This past week, we acted to:

  • Break more records reducing crime – New crime data from August show we had the FEWEST shooting incidents and shooting victims IN RECORDED HISTORY during the first eight months of 2025. The numbers also showed August was the SAFEST August on record for transit crime (excluding pandemic years). This continued drop in crime is the result of our administration’s hard work to prioritize public safety and end the culture of “anything goes” in our city.
  • Get even more affordable housing built – The City Planning Commission approved our OneLIC Neighborhood Plan, which would modernize zoning in Long Island City and help create nearly 14,700 new homes for New Yorkers. It will also create 14,400 new jobs by adding more commercial and industrial space in the area. Next, it heads to the full City Council for final approval.
  • Start the school year and celebrate a new school – This morning, our public schools opened for the new school year! Among several new schools we opened this year, HCBU Prep opened for the first time — there, high schoolers will earn college credits towards an associate’s degree from Delaware State University (DSU) and have guaranteed admission to DSU or be set on the path to attend the college of their choice.

↳ Three things to know this week:

  1. This Sunday, September 7, we’re hosting a free Broadway concert in Times Square, featuring live performances by 23 popular productions to celebrate New York City’s 400th anniversary and more than 100 years of Broadway. Our “Founded By Broadway” show — part of our “Founded By NYC” campaign — will feature performances from Wicked, Mamma Mia!, Chicago, and more. View the full lineup here
  2. New York City beaches and outdoor pools are closing on Sunday, so be sure to get in your final swim of the season! Our incredible lifeguards and NYC Parks staff have welcomed countless New Yorkers to swim and sunbathe across the boroughs, and they can't wait to see you again next year.
  3. Our Department of Sanitation is hosting free “SAFE Disposal” events across the five boroughs to let New Yorkers safely throw out solvents, automotive, flammables, and electronics that can’t go in their regular trash. Find a location near you, and check out this easy list to see what you can bring. The first collection event is this Sunday in Manhattan’s Union Square.
