Tech billionaire and far-right influencer Peter Thiel was one of the biggest and most essential donors who elevated the political careers of both Donald Trump and JD Vance. Now, the Trump administration has handed Thiel's company Palantir hundreds of millions of dollars to build a massive one-stop-shop database to monitor everyday Americans, turbocharge mass deportations, and more. Palantir specializes in mining personal data from thousands of sources — financial records, social media, travel patterns, personal associations — and converting it all into searchable databases. Now, imagine what they could do with the massive amount of personal data that the federal government has on us, including tax returns, health records, campaign finance reports, educational history, immigration and passport applications, mortgage loan information — you name it. The potential for abuse by this administration is mind-boggling. And as this system expands, Trump gains ever more power to target and punish Americans who speak out. The Intercept has been investigating and reporting on domestic government surveillance for more than a decade, and few if any news outlets have our combination of technical expertise and journalistic independence.
