Dear Sir/Madam,

 

 

The Consulate General of Japan, Mumbai in cooperation with The Japan Foundation and Teacherss Association of Japanese have organized The Spirit of Budo, an exhibition on The History of Japans Martial Arts.  The exhibition displaying brief history of martial arts - from battlefield combat techniques (bujutsu) to popular sports or physical exercise tempering body and spirit - will be held from 9th November 2013 to 19th November, 2013 (from 11.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m.) at the P.L. Deshpande Art Gallery, Ravindra Natya Mandir, Prabhadevi, Mumbai.

 

 

The exhibition consists of two parts: in the first the development and changes of Japanese martial arts from the 8th century to 19th century are explained with reproductions/originals of historical weapons such as bows and arrows, suits or armor, helmets and the second part of the exhibition deals with the reorganization of bujutsu to budo in the 19th and 20th centuries and how spirit of martial arts is still inherent in the daily life of the Japanese people today.  Nine budo associations are introduced with the display of the clothes and implements such as bamboo swords, protectors, bows and arrows which are used by players and students in the present day. 

 

 

The Spirit of Budo exhibition was inaugurated by Mr. Kiyoshi Asako, Consul General of Japan on 8th November, 2013 at 5.00 p.m.

 

The exhibition is being held not only to introduce the history of Japanese martial arts, but also of peoples aesthetic awareness and creativity and Japans social history and the Japanese way of thinking from a new angle.
