1861: John W. Dawson arrives in Salt Lake as the newly appointed governor. Within three weeks he alienates Mormons by vetoing the bill for statehood convention.

1893: The First Presidency and Twelve decide that garments worn under clothing should be white. This is the first departure of the Utah temple garment from the contemporary "Union suit" which comes in various colors and upon which the Utah "street garment" is based.

1941: Mervyn Bennion is the first Mormon to die during the U.S. military participation in World War II. As captain of the battleship 'West Virginia,' Bennion is killed on its bridge during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. He is the son-in-law of first counselor J. Reuben Clark and receives a posthumous Congressional Medal of Honor.
