Historic events in New Mormon History on 12/16
1852: Brigham Young, as Utah governor, issues “free Pardon for Jerome Owens who had been condemned to die for murder ín the first degree by Judge of first Judicial District.” Thomas Ellerbeck writes that Young requests “the privilege of going in and out of the House without being molested by their rising” in his honor. About 100 years later this practice reemerges among Mormons to honor LDS president.

1871: Seymour B. Young, son of senior Seventy's president, writes: "Salt Lake City has for the first time in its history houses of Ill fame almost on every corner."

1877: a vision of the destructions in America before the Second Coming. Attributed to John Taylor because of reference to reading "the French language" or to Wilford Woodruff who records this "very strange vision" in his diary, neither man claims authorship, which is actually by Mormon astrologer John Steele who sends a copy to Woodruff as church historian.

1886: U.S. deputy kills an unarmed polygamist, Edward M. Dalton, during an arrest attempt, and is the only death on either side during the decades of bitter anti-polygamy crusades. Dalton is a member of the Utah Territorial Central Committee of the People's Party and has twice before escaped after being arrested. The court finds the deputy not guilty of manslaughter.

1897: The First Presidency and apostles agree that "Adam is our father and God and no use to discuss it with [RLDS] Josephites or any one else."

1900: second counselor Joseph F. Smith tells Mormons of St. Johns, Arizona, that Jesus was married to the Mary who anointed his feet.

1916: The Deseret News features seventeen Utahns and Mormons who are starts in Hollywood's silent films. Among the best known today is Mack Swain of "Keystone Cops" films and other silent comedies. Swain's LDS father helped construct the Salt Lake temple. Two other Utahns in Keystone films are actresses Ora Carew and Mary Thurman.
