Hello Everyone,

Bogart is due to be put on the Red List. Animals on this list are in danger of being euthanized after 48 hours if the Animal Care Center where the animal is located becomes overcrowded, or are behaviorally unmanageable in the shelter. Animals appearing on the Red Alert are available to LAAS New Hope Partners at a reduced rate.
Please, If you are able to help Bogart, or need more information, please call me at 213.435.9152
Thank You!!

Bogart A1960933
5 yrs 65 lbs
Came to the Shelter as an Owner Surrender, on 01/11/21, due to behavior.

Bogart would do best starting in a single pet household
Please read the notes below. This is the perfect time to get him out.

Staff Notes/Owner surrender notes
12/05/20
dog showing aggression, teeth baring and barking, likely protecting owner. The owner stated the dog is kept indoors and is good with kids. The dog was brought in with a long chain as a leash and I had the owner bring in the dog as precautions.

This dog growled at me from his cage, I used the a.c.d device to transfer him once out of the cage he walked to  The pre s/n staff area, they were able to caress and scratch the base tail and the dog seemed to love it.

Possible protective over handler this dog snapped several times at the vet tech, it was also biting on my leash.

12-22-20
For the past couple days, I have walked by this dog and tried to interact with him through the kennel door. On approach he charges the kennel door, barking and snapping at my hand when I reach for the handle. If I open the door a crack, he tries to pry it open with his muzzle. Probably barrier reactivity.

After reviewing the OS survey form, I called the owner to get any additional info and specifics about the dog's behavior and living environment. The owner elaborated more and told me that the dog was basically kept as a "watchdog". He told me that the dog is always reactive to dogs and people on the other side of his fence which caused problems with his neighbors.

I went back to his kennel, sat down and baby talked for a few minutes. When he stopped barking, I pulled out the leash. His ears perked up and tail wagged. To keep him from dashing out, I looped it over him through the opening above the kennel door handle. When he saw the loop, he sat and waited to be leashed. Pulls very hard, needs a strong handler. Once in the yard and off leash he immediately defecated. However he spent his whole session in the yard urinating in little bits all over the fence line and trees. At first he was very social and leaning against me (about 3 minutes). Then he spent the rest of the time exploring the yard looking for ways out, periodically checking in with me. He was very curious about all pedestrians on the sidewalk, but did not react or bark beyond getting stiff and raising his tail straight up in the air. Moderately interested in the tennis ball, but would not retrieve. Anytime he would approach me, if I pet his butt, he would lean into it and lick my hand. He sat when he saw the leash loop again. Easy to leash. Pulled hard on the way back to the kennel. He charged at his neighbor's kennel but with minimal effort I was able to have him walk on his own. I used the clip end of the leash to remove it through the kennel door.

Owner is surrendering the dog due to the neighbor's dog jumping the fence (1 week after adopting Bogart) into his property, Bogart attacked the neighbor's dog. Did not bite anyone, owner says the dog is protective. Never been around kids

On approach he was at the front of his kennel wagging his tail and looking eager to be walked. Easy to leash. Very focused on getting out to the yard. Moderate puller. Once in the yard he immediately defecated. Urination resembled more like marking behavior as he spent his time in the yard sniffing many different areas and lifting his leg. Very affectionate. When I crouched down, he hopped in my lap and leaned into me. He let me take some selfies with him and he gave face kisses. He let me pet him all over. When I stood up he mostly ignored me and spent the rest of the time exploring the yard. Not interested in tennis and doesn't look up when you call him. Easy to releash and re kennel

ENGAGEMENT TRAINING

Bogart was calm and I looped him easily,  he pulled a little to the yard.  He was very social and friendly and would chase the ball and sometimes bring it back. He knows sit and takes treats gently.  I put him  back with no problem

Easy to leash, but gets very keyed up about other dogs when walking through the kennels. Darted at a small/medium size dog on a leash, recommend keeping him away from littles.
Approach when called, knows "sit". Got a little jumpy as he got more excited, wanted to climb up on my lap, but corrected easily when commanded and did not persist.
Alternated between keeping to himself in the yard and returning to me to check in/receive affection. Did not appear sensitive to touch.
Overall mellow energy and relatively easy to handle… Still seemed a little timid at times, but did not display any aggressive behavior report handler.
Apparently has some sort of issue/stiffness in his hips/hind legs, runs with a strange gait, but does not appear to slow him down much.

Bogart was sitting at the door and I looped him easily,  he pulled hard going to the yard . In the yard he was very friendly and social,  he knows sit and takes treats gently when I would sit he would jump up on me but to correct me well . He really loves affection and rolled over for a belly rub. I put him back with no problem

On approach, he was at the front of his kennel barking. When he saw the leash he positioned himself by the door way. While trying to leash him, he jumped into the loop and his front paw got looped as well. I was able to hold him and untangle his leg. Pulls moderately to the yard. Once in the yard, he urinated and defecated. Very interested in the dog on the other half of the yard. Ran up to the fence, stiff, tail straight up, some hackles raised. Started barking. Responded to correction with the spray bottle, but kept coming back to the fence to bark more. He began running up and down the fence line mirroring the other dog. After a few minutes of this, I took him and walked him around the parking lot to help him burn off some energy. Easy to rekennel.

ACT helped me take out Bogart for the first time. I was told he can be high energy and mouthy, even bitey with treats. He wandered around the yard a bit, but he didn't appear to have extra energy. Getting him out every day seems to have really helped. He can sit and give a paw-- he will paw AT you if he knows you have food, but it's very gentle. He loved treats but took them rather aggressively-- that's something to work on. He was very physically affectionate with me and responded to his name. I had no trouble bringing him back to the kennel.
