Hi all,

We had a great turnout for yesterday's Office Hours, and a few us
agreed that holding sessions in coffee shops might not be sustainable
if participation continues to grow. We pushed together about 6 or 7
tables, and we couldn't hear from one end to the other.

I'm researching alternative free venues, and if anyone has leads/
suggestions please let me know. The ideal space would be a private
room in a cafe. I want to keep the event casual, so office spaces are
a last resort.

Keep an eye on the Facebook event page for updates. And this week
let's scale down the invites to new people who haven't yet been
invited. Thanks everyone!

We should plan to have a few places since we have the informal New Media Office Hours meetings, the official New Media West meetings, and other information workgroups to think about.

Last night I sent emails to Jason Calacanis of Mahalo and Tim Shey of Next New Networks to ask if they might have a space we can use for our meetings.  Mahalo often hosts events at their Santa Monica location, and Next New Networks has often offered their LA space to us in the past.  Both are open to the ideas, and the Mahalo team also suggested the idea of holding meetings at the Los Angeles Public Library... apparently they have meeting rooms for this sort of thing.

I have also planned a meeting with Marc Hustvedt of Tubefilter to discuss New Media West, opening up the International Academy of Web Television's membership to new media professionals, and to see if there's some way we can team up with the Academy for meeting space.

If you have any more suggestions or concerns, go ahead and let me know.

Best,
Casey

Update:

Mahalo and NNN both offered us space, but I got a much better idea from Tyler (Mahalo) who suggests holding our meeting at the Los Angeles Public Library.  Apparently, they have meeting rooms for this sort of thing.  This might be a good idea for when we eventually have a vote... but until then, perhaps we can try to stick it out in the coffee shops.

My meeting with Marc Mustvedt (Tubefilter) has been postponed, but I've invited him to this week's Office Hours.  Not sure if he can come at this point, but I'm sure he (or other Tubefilter reps) will join our meetings eventually.

This Sunday we're going back to M Street Coffee in Sherman Oaks until
we figure out a better venue situation. Remember folks, this is just a
casual Q&A session so no pressure to join us every week. After Q&A
we'll most likely continue our discussion on SAG contracts and how to
structure our group.

Marc Hustvedt from Tubefilter has RSVP'd, so we may get a chance to
talk about the Streamy Awards. Also, Angela tells me her friend who
works at SAG may join us as well.

Just had a short private conversation with Rudy and we agree these smaller venues aren't ideal for hosting a lot of people, so let's keep the invites to a bare minimum this week.

The primary goal of Office Hours isn't to attract huge groups of people, but to give one-on-feedback/advice to folks who are "new to new media."

Also, we don't want to upset our friends by inviting them week after week. That would get on my nerves, too!

So I checked out the public library meeting rooms and you have to pay
a fee plus have proof of insurance, so I don't think that would be a
good idea for right now. We could get the fee waived since it's a free
public event, but we would still have to have insurance. I think our
best bet for when we are expecting a larger group would be NNN or
Mahalo.

I'm going to check out this other coffee house near my apartment in
Korea Town. It's called Loft Cafe, has free wifi, free parking, and an
upstairs, that is hopefully big enough for our group. I'll let you
guys know how it goes.

AFTRA has agreed to host an informational meeting on Wednesday, March 11th, at 7pm about their New Media Contract.  There are only 35 seats available, so if you want to attend please RSVP on the Facebook Event here: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=148704165056&ref=mf

Please note that if there is a great demand, AFTRA will host more events like this in the future.

Best,
Casey
