Our
Meeting with Shri Narendra Modi
On
our recent trip to India, we were in Vadodara last December. Vadodara being
close to Amdavad, I was eager to see the man who had done so much for Gujarat
and who had taken the country by storm. After some efforts, I was able to
contact the CM’s office. I requested if we could see him the next day between
11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. To my surprise, his office called me and told me that
the CM will see us next day at 12:00 p.m. at his residence near Raj Bhavan in Gandhinagar.
The
next day, December 7th, Amita (my wife) and I headed for Gandhinagar
by car at 9:00 a.m. It is usually 2 hours’ drive to Amdavad. We reached Gandhinagar
by 11:30 a.m. After going through tight security, we were in the CM’s office at
his residence just before 12:00.
There
were other people before us waiting for the CM. While waiting in his office, we
were treated with mineral water and some tea. We were excited to see this
amazing man who was drawing hundreds of thousands of people to his rallies across
India and who might become the Prime Minister of India in few months. After
half an hour or so, we were ushered in his office by his peon.
He
got up from his chair/desk and greeted us: “Kem Chho Chaitanyabhai? Aap Qyana
Chho?” (How are You Chaitanyabhai? Where are you from?). I told him I was from
Bhavnagar.
After
thanking him for seeing us, I presented him with both my books: CRIMES AGAINST
HUMANITY: A Shocking Record of US Crimes since 1776 and COLLAPSE: Civilization
on the Brink. Curious and smiling, he perused through the first book. Then asked
me as to what inspired me to write the first book. I answered that I had read extensively
and studied in great detail the darker side of US history and wanted to share
the knowledge with the people.
Realizing
that my other book “Collapse” was about the climate change, he rang the bell.
His peon showed up. He asked the peon to bring the book on the environment. The
peon brought it. He then smilingly presented his book to me. His book is titled:
Convenient Action: Gujarat’s Response To Challenges of Climate Change. He said
that former US vice-president Al Gore’s famous CD was titled Inconvenient
Truth; so his book is titled Convenient Action! Later on after browsing through
his book, I realized how much Gujarat has done responding to the challenges of
the climate change under his leadership.
I
asked him if he could sign his book for me. He said yes, but in Gujarati. Then
he signed it in Gujarati with a nice comment about me.
I
asked him how his campaign was going. He
said it was going well, adding that the last few days he was very busy
campaigning for the BJP Chief Ministers’ campaign in four states. In these
states, with the help of Narendrabhai, the Congress was crushed. In Rajasthan,
Madhya Pradesh and Delhi, the BJP had won big.
I
told Narendrabhai that many NRIs are very eager to see him become India’s Prime
Minister in 2014; that we are simply tired of this dynasty called Congress and
its government mired in colossal corruption. He said that “Our country today
has diabetes. It is the root of all the diseases. If we take care of diabetes,
all other diseases are cured.”
I
asked him about his vision for the country; what would he tackle first if he
were elected the Prime Minister? He smiled and said: “I will provide good
governance. That covers everything.”
By
this time, our time was almost up. I asked him if we could take a picture with
him. He said: “of course.” Then he got up, took both my books and displayed
them for the picture. I went next to him and Amita took our picture first. He then
called his own photographer who took a picture of all three of us. The CM said
we will get the picture e-mailed to us within 3 minutes.
Finally,
we bid good bye to Narendrabhai. Outside, the photographer took our e-mail ID
and right away we got the picture of three of us.
Amita
found him very charismatic. I found him very confident yet polite, down to
earth and friendly. He appeared to be a man who knew what he wanted, what to do
and how to go about it. He unmistakably seemed to be a no nonsense man of
action.
Browsing
through his book “Convenient Action”, one realizes how much he has done for
Gujarat as per availability of water, electricity savings and generation, Carbon
footprint reduction and green energy. As a person who has studied the climate
change in detail and has authored a book, I am really surprised at his
awareness of the subject and his actions towards green energy in Gujarat.
He
has brought Amdavad from 4th to 66th rank in the most
polluted cities in the country. As Chief Minister, he has ensured adequate water
supplies all over the state, built highways, water treatment plants, Elevated
Storage Reservoirs, pumping stations for drinking water supplies, water
harvesting structures, check dams, village ponds, and farm ponds. He has helped
create hundreds of thousands of micro irrigation structures for farmers of
Gujarat, built agro meteorological units. He has increased productivity of
crops and farmers’ incomes in Gujarat substantially. Production of rice, wheat,
groundnuts, castor and cotton has gone up significantly under his leadership.
Mired
in controversies before he took over, he has successfully carried out the
Sardar Sarovar project making irrigation water available to vast areas of
Gujarat saving thousands of KW of electricity and generating thousands more KW (from
Sardar Sarovar Dam) of electricity He
has afforested vast areas of Gujarat. A month ago, as we drove from Porbandar
to Dwarka and on to Jamnagar, we saw hundreds of windmills across these coastal
areas of Saurashtra, thanks to Narendra Modi’s encouragement and efforts. Under
his leadership, solar farms have come up across certain areas of Gujarat.
Thousands of acres of mangroves and tree plantation have come up in suitable
areas of Gujarat. Aquaculture and fisheries are coming up in the coastal areas
of Veraval.
If
India’s people vote for BJP and elect
Shri Narendra Modi to the premiership of India, I have no doubt in my mind that
under his able, no-nonsense governance, India will be a dynamic, rapidly
progressing nation that will reassert its rightful place as a major global
power and will be an envy of the whole world.
