Hello Isha,
What a start to the year. Like your usual roundups, we're sharing the latest New Harvest updates, straight to your inbox. But we're also including a little bit more "behind the scenes" of what our team has been up to, to keep you posted on our journey.
Updates on upcoming projects and events below!
NEW PROJECT: Growth factors, food safety, and artificial intelligence!
New Harvest, along with Vireo Advisors, the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii), and Defined Bioscience, have been awarded a $25k grant from Food System Innovations to generate a protein thermostability dataset for artificial intelligence applications!

Growth factors are critical to cultured meat production. Therefore, understanding their stability after cultured meat products are harvested, cooked, and eaten is critical for the growth of the industry. Recent advances in artificial intelligence have led to models that help predict the stability of proteins and accelerate this type of research. However, the lack of public data on the growth factors used in CM production is limiting the application of AI to this challenge.
Using a combination of publicly available data and data generated by our collaborators at Defined Bioscience, the project will create a dataset on protein thermostability compatible with AI workflows. This data will all be released in an open-source format, facilitating field-wide data-sharing and providing a foundation for AI/ML tool development.
This project is part of New Harvest’s Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in Cellular Agriculture Initiative and Cultured Meat Safety Initiative (CMSI). Thank you to FSI for supporting this important work!
Canada-Singapore Cell Ag Networking Session 🇨🇦 🇸🇬

|
This week, Dr. Rickey Yada from the University of Alberta will be in Singapore for the Canada in Asia meeting. We have been working closely with him on establishing a new Institute of Cellular Agriculture.
He will be speaking at the Canada-Singapore Cell Ag Network Session on February 21, 2025. This event presents a great opportunity to learn more about cellular agriculture and the ecosystem we are building in Canada.
If you are in Singapore, be sure to register for the event and connect with Dr. Yada.

2025 Canadian Alternative Protein Sympotium
|
|
On March 29th, an exciting event is coming: the 2025 Canadian Alternative Protein Symposium!
This one-day event, hosted by the University of Toronto, Waterloo, and McMaster Alt Protein Clubs, will bring together academia, industry pioneers, and policymakers to explore the future of sustainable food systems.
Through expert panels, networking sessions, and discussions on research, industry scaling, regulation, and funding, the symposium will foster collaboration and highlight Canada’s role in advancing alternative proteins. Save your spot!
Fun fact: This event is being co-organized by one of our grantees, Rikard Saqe, who co-authored our paper on “Artificial intelligence and machine learning applications for cultured meat”!
If you’re interested in sponsoring the event, please reach out to uoftoronto...@gmail.com.
Canadian Cultivated Meat Online Seminar
|
|
On April 15th, Myo Palate, one of Canada's leading cultured meat companies, will be hosting the first Canadian Cultivated Meat Online Seminar. This seminar will provide insights into the development of the cultivated meat industry in Canada.
Registration is open, so make sure to join us!
Join a Cultured Meat Safety Working Session
|
|
New Harvest and Vireo Advisors are hosting a series of working sessions for Phase 3 of our Cultured Meat Safety Initiative throughout 2024 - 2025. Our next session will be March 12, 2025 in San Francisco, California!
These sessions aim to foster collaboration amongst individuals interested in actively working on or advising cultured meat and seafood safety research by identify steps for conducting collaborative and pre-competitive research to address cultured meat safety priorities.
These working sessions were launched with funding from from the US National Science Foundation (Grant No. 2417703) and the US Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture (AFRI project 2024-07959). It is exciting to see two major US agencies supporting this work to bring together experts from across the field on one of the most important, pre-competitive research challenges: safety!Any opinions, findings, and conclusions or recommendations expressed in this material are those of the author(s) and should not be construed to represent any official USDA or U.S. Government determination or policy.
