README.markdown is not allowed?

Hi all,
After I changed the README file format from rdoc to markdown, 'rake
gemspec' doesn't work. It's complaining like this,
** README.markdown is missing or in the wrong format for auto-
intuiting.
run `sow blah` and look at its text files
Is only rdoc format allowable for README?
