Hi all me and my dad were wondering if there would be 2 people willing
to drive down to NY with us we only have room for 2 but we thought
that it would be more worth while if we could bring some people from
our RepRap group! Plus we are going to be meeting up with our Makerbot
Friends Bre and Zack!! let us know soon because we wanted to plan our
adventure!

You know, I mentioned Maker Faire NY to my wife, and she's been
insisting that I should go.. I think I may take you up on that!

I'm in Methuen Massachusetts.. I could drive down to you and leave my
car at your place (you're in Rhode Island, right?).

Count me as a 95% certain "yes".

If there's any space left I'm in boston and would love to join y'all.

I'm in the Boston area and will be headed with a colleague. If there's room, we'll go with anyone. If not, that leaves two seats available in my car. Important thing to note is that this is not just about the MakerFaire in NY - they've timed it to overlap with the first ever Open Hardware Summit http://www.openhardwaresummit.org/ .

Any takers?

After consulting my extremely busy schedule it appears I will be unable to make it for maker faire this year.

I've been thinking of inviting my Dad to go down to Makerfaire too. He's retired so his schedule should be free, but I haven't asked him yet.

If that ends up causing the need for more seats, and I have to drive my car down, I'd still like to meet up with everyone once we're there. My brother, who lives in Brooklyn, is already planning on meeting up w/us at some point for makerfaire.

Then again, if my dad can't go for some reason, disregard this whole message. :)

..Jeff

p.s. I asked my wife repeatedly if she could get by without our 7-person MDX, but she insists she needs it for our 4 kids and couldn't fit them in my 4-person TSX. :(

Alright, this is YOUR last chance to hitch a ride up to the Open Hardware Summit and MakerFaire NY with me and my colleague. If I don't hear back in the next couple of days we may plan to take train or plane instead.

So I can't swing the extra days to catch the Open Hardware summit (as much as I'd like to).. I'll be going down probably on Friday and coming back Sunday evening.

So my Dad did decide to join me. Nicholas and Bruce, thanks for the offer, sorry to change my plans, but I'd still like to meet up down there.. We should determine a time and place to meet.. (maybe we should all exchange cell phones.. there's gotta be some meet-up mobile mapping service for exactly something like this, so we can see where each other are, etc.. Google Latitude comes to mind, but if there's something better....)

My dad has been heavily pushing for the train (as he loves trains), rather than me driving him down. So we'll probably take the train down Friday night, stay with my brother, his wife, and my nephew, then Saturday the three of us will head over to Makerfaire (my brother's going too).  You can just get tickets at the door, right?

So does anyone know the layout well enough to know if there's a place for us to meet? I'm sure we'll all be hitting the RepRap 3D Printing pavilion...

I am mostly interested in the open hardware summit. I'm curious what
you guys are doing for accommodations? If I can plan something this
short notice I would love to go along in any vehicle that is heading
down. I can get the time off I just need to figure where I'm sleeping
I guess. I know my friend Jimmie Rodgers will be there he usually
sleeps on peoples floors. I'll try to get in touch with him as well.

So I asked around to see if anyone knows what cell phone apps can help a bunch of people see each other on a map, meet up, etc.  (Latitude is good, but at least on the iPhone you need to have the web page up and running for it to know where you are).

It looks like on the iPhone one solution might be the free app "Loopt". It provides push notifications when your friends are near, shows you people's locations on a map like Latitude does, and lets you set for how long after you run the app that it maintains your location (e.g. you can say it should keep updating for 12 hours after the last time you ran the app.. Presumably it runs in the background for that long then quits).

We've got a pretty small group here, so we can probably trust each other with our locations (at least for the weekend).  What type of phone does everyone have?  iPhone? Android? Does your phone have GPS?

Why doesn't everyone that wants to meet up (and that wants to try Loopt and/or Latitude) privately send me their phone number and the email address they use for Google Latitude.  I'll take all of them, put them in one list, and privately mail the list to everyone who's going, so it's not kept publicly on this list.  Then everyone can add everyone else on the list as friends.

I bought my weekend ticket (both days).  I'm going down with my dad (Larry) via train Friday night, then Saturday and Sunday we'll be attending along with my brother (Jon).

..Jeff
