For many years, the Crichton Community Council (CCC) has organized the New Edinburgh community garage sale event. In return for arranging an event permit with the City of Ottawa and advertising the event, the CCC asked participants to consider donating 10% of their sales to us. Those donations are used to run events organized by our volunteers, such as the Halloween Howl party, skating, New Year’s Day brunch and family picnic, or are invested in the park and field house. In the June edition of the New Edinburgh News we mentioned that this event was unlikely to happen this year and we have not advertised it on the community events calendar due to the uncertainly and risks created by the pandemic.
Surprisingly, the City is allowing community garage sales and individual garage sales now that we are in Stage 3 of re-opening. Due to the risk of transmitting the coronavirus when large groups gather there are additional rules that must be followed. After reviewing those rules, it would be very difficult for us to ensure the Province of Ontario’s orders for executing a safe event are followed throughout the neighbourhood. The CCC will be discussing that and making a final decision on the event at our first online meeting after the summer break, which will be held Tuesday, September 8th at 7:30 pm. If you would like to attend this meeting, please contact us at CrichtonComm...@gmail.com and we will send you the information to join our Zoom meeting. The CCC will communicate our final decision on the community garage sale after our meeting.
If residents wish to hold an individual garage sale, we advise that they familiarize themselves with the new rules surrounding these events before proceeding.
The CCC is always looking for volunteers, either in an ongoing capacity, or for a one-time event commitment. Please contact us at CrichtonComm...@gmail.com if you are interested in serving your community!
