Hello again,
Following up regarding the dog bite incident, we have resolution.
The owner was located and was very concerned, responsive and helpful.
We received the information needed to address and rule out concern about rabies (ie rabies vaccinations were verified and up to date).
I send my sincerest thanks and appreciation to all who responded to this request for assistance.
The responses were supportive and helpful and resulted in locating the owner of the dogs.
Should anyone else find themselves in this situation, this is what I learned:
Try to get contact information from the dog owner immediately due to concern about rabies.
Check the City of Ottawa website for rabies information (what to do, who to call)
An Ottawa Public Health Inspector (OPHI) and By-Law will want to be involved because while the incidence of rabies is extremely low in Ottawa the impact is extremely high (typically fatal).
They are knowledgeable and provide a clear, step-by step process to follow.
If you do not have the owner's contact information, posting on the neighbourhood emails lists like this one and the neighbourhood Facebook page (thank you Paula!) can help in locating the dogs' owner.
This was an unfortunate incident where (unprovoked) the dogs got overly excited and reacted unexpectedly.
As a dog owner, the next right thing to do in this type of situation is to:
Get the dog under control
Provide or get support for the person bitten, recognizing they may be experiencing a bit of shock.
Ensure that you give your contact information to the person and/or follow up with By-Law and the OPHI.
Ensure your dog's rabies vaccine is up to date
Once again, thank you to everyone. We were recipients of such good will amongst the neighbours on this list and in the community.
With appreciation,
Pamela.
