Commissioners reject pay raise

LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL
For the second year in a row, Clark County commissioners agreed to
forgo their scheduled 4 percent pay raise as a symbolic gesture in
hard financial times.

Commissioner Rory Reid said Tuesday that it would be unfair to ask
employees to make concessions on their pay raises to aid the county's
budget crunch unless commissioners were willing to do the same.

In 2007, the commission approved the yearly 4 percent wage increases
through 2010.

Their base salaries were set to rise to $80,008 on July 1. Now they
will remain at the 2008 level of $73,971.

However, state law doesn't allow commissioners to reject the annual 2
percent longevity pay, which kicks in after four years of service,
county officials said.

Commissioners Reid and Tom Collins are eligible for longevity pay.
Commissioner Lawrence Weekly will qualify next year, as would
Commissioners Chris Giunchigliani and Susan Brager if they are re-
elected.
