Appointing a new superintendent is the responsibility of the CCSD
Trustees? Wait a minute - back up. When my cigar goes out and I am
without a fresh cup of coffee I am become very, very irrated. So now
that I have my cigar lite and a fresh cup of coffee in front of
me.......

I would like to know the procedures that the CCSD Trustees use to pick
a Superintendent. What are the qualifications of the Superintendent?
Last time they hired Walt Ruffles and he did not have a degree in
eduation so in return they had to hire another person that does to
work along side of him that had a degree in eduation. That is twice
the salary for one position. Not a smart move on the Trustees
part!!!!!

Is the Job description and contract changed for a new superintendent
so that we do not have this problem again with a double salary? Is
the contract sound, solid and comprehesive enuogh for re-negoiated the
contract so they do not get hefty raises and benefits and cars and
expense accounts, etc. etc.? The public was livid on this when it
happened and the contracts could not be re-negoiated especially with
all the budget cuts we have to make and let teachers and programs go.
Did the Trustee LISTEN to us!

Does the CCSD Trustees have people that they work with to make a
decision on a new Superintendent? And if so I would like to know who
they are and how the CCSD Trustees picked them. Was it ever posted,
or will be posted that the trustee would like input on a certain
person(s) they are considering for the Superintendent Position to the
public?

Food for thought

No. They have an agency looking for candidates for that position. Will they involve the public, I am sure not.

It is a Head Hunter Agency that specializes in getting Superintendents. They did not disclose the name.

Not exactly true.

The school board approved an RFP last week to solicit bids from head
hunter/recruiting agencies. Bids are due sometime in June. After the
firm is selected, the firm will search the country (we hope) and
propose at least 4 candidates to the board for consideration. Then
the board picks who they want.

For the board, having a head hunter allows them to avoid the open
meeting law. Nothing prevents individual members of the board from
the speaking with the selected head hunter in private while the
candidates are narrowed to 4. If a head hunter was not used
everything would be public record.

As it stands, if 50 applicants are found and the head hunter firm
presents 4 to the board, only the records of the 4 will be made
public. We (the public) will never know who the other 46 applicants
are.

About the only good news is there are two chances for public comment.
After the head hunters turn in their bids, the public will have a
chance to speak about the those firms at a public meeting before the
board picks the firm. The second chance comes once the 4 candidates
are presented to the board the public will have a chance to speak
then. However, that will not occur until October at the earliest.

Thank you Kevinn for this information!!!! My question is this: Do
you feel the Trustees have enough knowledge to pick a Superintendent?
That's alot of responsibility for 5 people to pick a Super for the 5th
largest District in the US.

Actually there are 7 Trustees, not 5.

Do they have enough knowledge? That is debatable. The reality is they
were elected to make this decision and other things that Trustees do.
The more important question is will they listen to the parents,
teachers and tax payers or will they listen to the self serving
interests of the administration. On this matter and many others they
ignore everyone but staff. So far on this matter, they are siding
with staff.

At last weeks meeting the Trustees ignored one of their own, Erin
Cranor, when she advised them to define what the score card for the
recruiting firm will be. They ignored her. The result will allow
staff to define the score card after everyone has bid. This allows
staff the opportunity to skew the scoring to artificially favor the
recruiter staff wants to use.

These reasons are why it is so important that the decision be made
after the election so the new Trustees can vote in the selection
process.

Hi Kevinn, They are going to pick the one of there choice, not who we think would be better. Just watch and see.The board has no consideration for the public.
