SoI have 5th gen ryzen mini pcs on my tvs right now. Looking at maybe upgrading them because of 4k hevc playback issues.

Looking between 7th gen ryzen or 13th gen intel mini pcs, anyone play with playback on these?

HEVC and or AV1?

Alright you were right, It was not my computer hardware. I grabbed a AV1 4k and a HEVC 4k put them on my desktop. Played them through VLC both were doing the same thing as in plex. So I checked my CPU AV1 around 20-25% and HEVC around 8%. So I looked a little further, my HDMI is only allowing max 30hz and video playback is 25fps. So I switched my minipc to 25hz and the video smoothed out, both in plex and vlc.

+1 from me as well for auto-connect alsa, joystick, raw-usb, hardware-observe and shutdown to plex-htpc since are clearly needed for plex-htpc to properly operate. +2 votes for, 0 votes against, granting the requested auto-connections. This is now live.

@tamas I do not see joystick not shutdown plugged yet in the latest plex-htpc uploaded revision. Are you planning to add them soon? I have granted the declaration anyways but let me know if you are not willing to plug them anymore so I remove them.

Plex has traditionally been known for its media center software, which lets you store content on one device and access it from elsewhere. By running Plex Media Server on a desktop computer or NAS device, you can stream videos or music to your phone, tablet, laptop, streaming player, smart TV, or game console.

While media server software is a strong niche, in recent years Plex has been branching out. It now offers its own free library of ad-supported movies, TV shows, and live streaming channels, with no media server required. In April, Plex also launched a universal streaming TV guide and watchlist, letting users find things to watch across services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu. On certain devices, you can even launch videos from those services directly through Plex.

The overarching goal is to make Plex into a centralized TV hub. Instead of sifting through a dozen different streaming apps, you can just use Plex as your main menu, with media server content and over-the-air TV listed right alongside the latest movies and shows from major streaming services.

But Windows Media Center was an outdated concept long before Microsoft abandoned it with Windows 10, as the world was already moving onto streaming services by then. Even if you do run your own media server or over-the-air DVR, chances are you also subscribe to services like Netflix and Hulu.

My question is. how do folks use roomie to start programs on their HTPC? i.e. plex home theater. I know i can use the directional pads to move around the MCE interface and open plex from there, but is there a way to create a button in roomie that will open plex from anywhere? if so what do i need to do that?

For simplicity, rather than emailing support for a copy, we are just going to attach the full set right here. This is the MCE Controller command set which you may feel free to modify and then import into your Roomie which will override the library set.

To add the custom PLEXSTART command recommended by the previous poster, you would just add that one command as shown above to this file. This file then needs to be imported to Roomie via Roomie Agent or Dropbox.

Thanks for the code list, I am able to see the PLEXSTART as a command on my remote, in the logs of MCE Controller it states invalid command. I updated to MCE 1.8.4 which came out last weeks, this update allows you to have all native commands built in. It no long relays on MCEControl.

I had to use the Kodi profile for Plex HTPC. Most buttons work, but home is missing. To program a button for home, just add a random unused Kodi action to the home key on the remote (I used the colour Blue, which is F4 I think), sync that, then map that button to the "h" key in the flirc USB app. You can do the same thing for subtitles etc. just line things up with the plex keymap.

Fairly new to Arch and Linux and I've been able to solve most problems but I've been stuck on this one. I'm running KDE (Xorg) with an NVIDIA 4080 and using the proprietary drivers. This has been my only issue with anything related to NVIDIA/display issues.

I run a multi-monitor setup with two monitors (1440p/240hz, 1440p/144hz) and a TV (4k, 60hz). I have no problems with the monitors but when the TV is connected the issues start occurring. This issue occurs whether the TV is the only one connected or if the monitors are connected as well and this issue does not occur in Windows. I've tested this with mpv, VLC, Dragon Player, and Plex HTPC (Plex HTPC being the main reason I would like to get this working). MPV is the only one that does not have this issue and it is the only one where MangoHUD pops up. If I watch something on Plex HTPC it looks like I'm getting half of the frames that MPV is getting. I find it odd that MPV works and Plex doesn't since Plex HTPC uses mpv as the backend and they're both using the same mpv.conf for settings.

Possible Cause?: I did notice that when I set my TV to 60hz with the KDE settings, it was actually being set to 59.9994hz. I'm thinking that the issue is the .9994 vs the monitors ending in a full number. Ideally, I'd like to be able to use my TV at 59.9994/60hz for gaming and not have to rely on the workaround.

Literally "half the refreshrate" means you're missing a vsync interval. Have you tried suspending/disabling the compositor when running plex (Alt+Shift+F12 by default iirc)/is Vsync enabled in Plex itself/can you disable that? Also are any of these other solutions using accelerated video decoding/e.g. VDPAU and you aren't on your mpv runs/have you tried disabling that?

Thanks for taking the time to reply! It looks like the compositor was the culprit. Hitting Alt+Shift+F12 made it run as normal and also fixed an issue in a game that I thought was tied to Wine (game kept refocusing itself and changing as if it was being maximized). I am noticing some slight screen tearing when I'm scrolling inside of my web browser after toggling it.

Sorry, this is with the TV. I noticed that I do get screen tearing with the compositor off with my monitors as well but the smoothness issues/skipped frames go away when the compositor is off. Last night I turned on "Force Composition Pipeline" to try to combat the intense screen tearing on my TV and it seemed to make a difference so far.

If the compositor wasn't relevant, I'd say the HDMI cable is undergraded (does this happen if you keep the refresh rate at 60Hz but run the TV at 1920x1080 ?)

If it wouldn't happen w/ the TV alone, I'd say the width surpassing 8192px might be an issue.

Does it happen if you don't put the TV into the very left, but the middle or right position?

I did some more testing and it does happen even without the TV. It looks like the compositor is cutting frames in half when active. I tried out Wayland to see if the same thing happened and as far as I could tell it wasn't. (But I did get a ton of other graphical issues which made me switch back to X11)

You can test to force the full composition pipeline (notably w/ only one output attached) in nvidia-settings/X server display config/advanced or select the video sync device, nvidia-setttings/x screen/xvideo settings

If the transient changes in nvidia-settings help in any regard, you can automatize them (please don't write a static server config w/ nvidia-settings: it's cruft and likely causes you issues down the road)

Hi, I'm just wondering, has anyone made a nice guide for using UnRAID as a HTPC? So for example, installing plex player, how to get a remote working with it ( I have harmony for example), that sort of thing.

Usually I think headless seems to be the major use case is all. Whereas I would like to use it with my big screen as I have a cupboard it can go into with all the AV gear which is hidden away so the noise of a dozen HDDs doesn't bother me.

You can also fun full fledged VMs and in that case the os you use is up to you. However if you want to use a locally attached screen in conjunction with the VM you do need hardware that can support pass-through of the GPU to a VM. This needs the appropriate virtualisation support on the motherboard and CPU.

Yeah, that's kinda what I thought... I know I can pass through discrete graphics, but it seems to be shame that I can't use the capability I'm paying for anyway in the main board. It's a coffee lake Xeon E-2146G (which I won't receive for 2 weeks it's so new) and a Asus WS C246 Pro motherboard. Anyone know if it's possible to pass through the integrated graphics to a guest?

Reading this -passthrough/ I think it might be possible if I use another graphics card (old one I've got lying around) that will do VGA for the host, configure the host bios to initialise the card, then tell the system not to load the drivers for the integrated graphics, then pass it through. Here's hoping. thoughts?
