The southern African country of Malawi may not be what comes to mind when you think of kung fu movies. But four young acrobats in its capital, Lilongwe, are out to change that. The trailer for their first locally produced action flick, The Town Monger, has been generating buzz online and drawn interest from regional cable distributors. The film will premiere in Malawi this week.
At first, we were performing around our neighborhood. After the positive response, we started performing in townships, performing in the streets. In the process, people would give us money for each performance," explained group member Abdul Rashid Shaibu.
"We have sometimes been accused by many people, even by our own relatives, that what we are doing has no future. But I could not back down because I had a vision, and, moreover, these are the skills which God blessed me with," said Alfred Hambali of Kufewa Acrobatics.
The trend, spreading swiftly like bird flue, has not left out American and Nigerian made movies, which include S.W.A.T, Rambo, Predator, Aki Na Ukwa, Dad Must Obey, Deadly Play, Mr. Ibu, Ukwa and others.
However, exciting the movies might be-though, the translation is not usually literal translation of actual scripts-Cosoma has described the development as total violation of copyright laws, arguing it is not authorised business.
The translated movies are currently making waves in townships and rural areas, as most video showrooms have adopted it as a trend to feature a Chinese, Nigerian or American Chichewarised movie on its daily menu.
On Saturday 30th December, 2023, the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) revived its Entertainer of the Year event and the ceremony was held at the Bingu International Convention Center (BICC) in Lilongwe, bringing to life the tradition event that had been introduced in 1970s but had been on hiatus due to various challenges.
The event saw Akila emerging the actor of the year and was also pronounced the 2023 MBC Entertainer of entertainers and he has bagged home a trophy, a return ticket to South Africa, a refrigerator and Kiliye Kiliye decorder from Sanwecka Tech Companions and R1,500 which is close K139,000.
Apart from the arranged prizes, the audience also took time to shower the entertainer of entertainers with gifts and Maranatha Private Academy through its Managing Director Ernest Kaonga surprised the Lilongwe based actor with two million kwacha, claiming Akila deserved the accolade for entertaining Malawians with his acts and his translation of English movies to vernacular language, Chichewa.
While commending the MBC management for reviving the annual event and hosting it exceptionally, Kaonga expressed commitment towards 2024 MBC Entertainers of the Year Awards ceremony and he also encouraged other artists to pull up their socks if want to make it at the next event.
Those who have grown up in Malawi know pretty well how iconic is this ceremony. In those days there was no TV, we gathered around the radio. We could not sleep till we heard who was the entertainer of entertainers. That was how powerful and motivating this programme is and let me assure you MBC we will not leave you as sponsors as long as you keep coming up with initiatives that touch all of us Malawians.

First released in 2009 at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, The Figurine is one of the few Nollywood films that have received appreciable international, critical, and scholarly attention. Compared with Nollywood movies before it, The Figurine represented a noticeable step forward in terms of cinematography and storytelling quality.
The film arguably helped spark a mindset shift in Nollywood towards making films that would show in theaters, as opposed to simply home video. Furthermore, The Figurine also inspired an entire 455-page book called Autering Nollywood, which offered scholarly analysis on the film from academics and film luminaries in Nigeria and beyond.
