Dear colleagues,

Markus Friedrich from Detroit has made me aware of an interesting crowdfunding platform that helps to launch smaller research projects.

Please find below his pledge for support for an interesting cave beetle project. This will allow them to pioneer research into the cave beetle Ptomaphagus hirtus. Unexpectedly, this cave beetle was found to possess a functional, yet minimized visual system, and therefore will be a cool system to investigate both its vision as well as its timing mechanisms. Further details to be found below.

More on the "experiment" platform that manages these funding schemes, and details of how to participate yourself, either as supporter, or as proposer, can be found here: https://experiment.com/how-it-works

Best wishes,

Florian

The project is part of a special campaign by experiment.com with the theme “groundwater and caves“: One can find further interesting projects there and see how my project fairs in a competition for the highest number of backers. The project with the highest number of backers receives an additional $500 and there are two runners-up prizes of $200 each. That's why the number of backers is as important as the average of the amount of backing. So just by chipping in a single dollar, everyone makes a big difference.

At this point, the cave beetle campaign ranks solidly at second place in this competition:

So really, it doesn't need to be a big amount. A single dollar would already make a big difference. And spreading the news among nature enthusiasts is equally important and appreciated.

Lieber Florian,

Herzlich, Sigi
