Hi All,

Here is an update on the cognitive representation discussions. My personal goal of this few weeks will be to make a decision about how to represent these inside of the NIFSTD and the NeuroLex, and where our efforts will need to go in order to really start to bring together data from really different techniques.

We will start off with a discussion of the representation of cognitive processes in NEMO next Tuesday and then we will pick up with Janna Hastings and the Mental Functioning Ontology.

Here is the schedule and the information on the first talk.

Topic: Harmonizing the Representation of Cognitive Processes
Date/Time: April 17, 2012, 11:00 am PDT
Presenter: Gwen Frishkoff
URL: http://connect.neuinfo.org/webinar
Description: Dr. Frishkoff will discuss harmonization of NEMO, a formal ontology for studies of human electrophysiology, and cogPO, an ontology of cognitive neuroscience protocols (experiment design) that is based on BrainMap. The goal of  integrating NEMO and cogPO is to create a framework to support valid mappings from brain to mental functioning. Mental functions are inferred from measurements of brain and behavioral data within specific experiment contexts. Thus, in order to create an ontology for mental functioning that is evidence-based, it will be important to consider the logical and empirical bases for these inferences. We will discuss some insights that could be gained by brain data within a formal ontology that also captures the experimental context for these measures in a fine-grained, analytic way.

Thanks so much, Anita, for organizing this.

Yes, that sounds great. Maybe we can target this as a discussion topic for our ICBO session -- if Janna and Werner agree.

Thanks. I guess I neglected to provide a title. The one you provided is great, but I'm not sure I can live up to it. Maybe: "Harmonizing ontologies in cognitive neuroscience: Towards an evidence-based, formal representation of mental function"?
