"Imagine you've been observing a distant galaxy for years, and it always seemed calm and inactive," says Paula Snchez Sez, an astronomer at ESO in Germany and lead author of the study accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics. "Suddenly, its [core] starts showing dramatic changes in brightness, unlike any typical events we've seen before."

The team tried to understand these brightness variations using a combination of archival data and new observations from several facilities, including the X-shooter instrument on ESO's VLT in Chile's Atacama Desert. Comparing the data taken before and after December 2019, they found that SDSS1335+0728 is now radiating much more light at ultraviolet, optical, and infrared wavelengths. The galaxy also started emitting X-rays in February 2024.

"The most tangible option to explain this phenomenon is that we are seeing how the [core] of the galaxy is beginning to show (...) activity," says co-author Lorena Hernndez Garca, from MAS and the University of Valparaso in Chile. "If so, this would be the first time that we see the activation of a massive black hole in real time."

"These giant monsters usually are sleeping and not directly visible," explains co-author Claudio Ricci, from the Diego Portales University, also in Chile. "In the case of SDSS1335+0728, we were able to observe the awakening of the massive black hole, [which] suddenly started to feast on gas available in its surroundings, becoming very bright."

Follow-up observations are still needed to rule out alternative explanations. Another possibility is that we are seeing an unusually slow tidal disruption event, or even a new phenomenon. If it is in fact a tidal disruption event, this would be the longest and faintest such event ever observed.

"Regardless of the nature of the variations, [this galaxy] provides valuable information on how black holes grow and evolve," Snchez Sez says. "We expect that instruments like [MUSE on the VLT or those on the upcoming Extremely Large Telescope (ELT)] will be key in understanding [why the galaxy is brightening]."

An unsuspecting galaxy named SDSS1335+0728, located 300 million light-years away from us, started shining brighter than it had ever been seen before in 2019, completely out of the blue, according to a new paper in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.

Sometimes, galaxies randomly light up due to sudden events like supernovae or when a star gets eaten by a black hole in a tidal disruption event, but these usually last less than a year. SDSS1335+0728, on the other hand, has been getting brighter and brighter since 2019 and has bizarre variations in its brightness that indicate that its brightness may be a result of its supermassive black hole awakening.

The astronomers suggest that SDSS1335+0728 likely has an "active galactic nucleus" (AGN), which is a very bright region surrounding a supermassive black hole at the center of a galaxy. When the black hole suddenly awoke in 2019, it caused the AGN to glow brighter than ever before, lighting up as the black hole started to suck in gas and dust.

Objective: The current study was guided by Nigrescence theory (Cross, 1971, 1991) and explored the phenomenon of racial awakening or epiphanic experiences of Black adults. We were interested in describing the context and perceived outcomes of the epiphanies in participants' understanding of what it means to be Black.

Method: Sixty-four adults participated in racial life narrative interviews. There was an equivalent number of men and women who participated from 4 sites: Australia, Bermuda, South Africa, and the United States.

Results: Findings from dimensional analysis highlight the turning points, triggers, and awakening or epiphanies in one's racial identity. Specifically, in this study racial awakening or increased awareness about the meaning of being Black was spurred by personal experiences and/or observations, education, and activism. Participants discussed increased racial activism, racial pride, and possible-selves after the process of racial awakening and continued exploration. Only 1 participant described disappointment and despair after a racial epiphany.

Conclusions: Findings extend our understanding of the process in which people develop a sense of racial consciousness. Insights may help inform future researchers in terms of identifying racial awakening prototypic stories and counselors in terms of providing opportunities to assist individuals in the meaning-making process. The international team of astronomers is analysing data from a number of telescopes hoping to determine whether the black hole's activity is temporary -- perhaps caused by a star being ripped apart -- or whether it will continue to be active for a long time.

I'm a returning player. I 100% cleared South Mediah and in North Mediah right now. Level is 60. Notification shows "Character Awakening / Ascension" which takes me to story menu when I click on it. But there is no awakening or ascension quest. But I do have "Descendents of Goyen" quest completed which from other videos I saw on YouTube seem to be related to awakening.
