I have an early version (Firmware V1.1.83 Nov 2 2010) of the pre-assembled Netzer web server which I want to use simply as a remote control switch via its built-in web server. The unit works fine across my local network but I am struggling to access it from the internet side. I have opened the appropriate port in my Netgear router (initially the Netzer's default port of 65000, but in case that port had a problem I changed the Netzer to port 8080 and opened port 8080 in the router.

When I try to access the Netzer from the internet it appears that the signal is being received, because if I look at the router's log I see the incoming being directed to the correct local address for the Netzer; also the browser error message I get is not simply "Page not found" but (after some delay) "No response from server" (or the equivalent).

I have tried remote access from a PC ADSL line, and also from my smartphone, both directly and using it as an access point for a PC.

For some reason the Netzer's home page is not being shown when accessing from the internet although it is ok when accessed from the local network. I have checked that the correct gateway address is set in the Netzer.

I also have a server based CCTV system on my network (on port 80) which I can access externally without any trouble.

I'd be grateful for any suggestions because I have run out of ideas at the moment!

Thanks

Hi Rampak,

please do not send any HTML mails to this list, thanks.

First I thought you want to access the GPIO server of the Netzer (as you
stated that you have changed the port from 65000 to 8080). You now access
the GPIO server via 8080, there is no webpage to view...
The HTTP port is changable since version 1.4 pro.

Solution: You should fix the IP address of the Netzer (no DHCP or AutoIP).
Configure your port forwarding in source/destination fashion (NAT). Means:
If someone connects from outside and accesses i.e. port 8080 forward him to
Netzers IP and port 80. Most of the routers support this kind of port
forwarding.

Sven

Hi Sven

Thank you for your time. I had the Netzer set to fixed IP address and also reserved this address for the Netzer in my router (Netgear DG834v2). I have configured port forwarding to direct incoming port 8080 to the local Netzer IP address. I can't see any way in my router to force it to send to any specific port on the Netzer (:

Here is a log entry from the router after unsuccessfully trying to connect:

Mon, 2012-11-19 20:34:17 - TCP Packet - Source:178.107.56.68,57110 Destination:192.168.0.100,8080 - [Networker match]

Do you think I need to get a different router?

Sorry if I seem to have posted HTML - I just prepared my message offline using text editor and cut and pasted into the forum.

Kind Regards

Geoff

Time to switch back to pure text ;)

As I can see from the manual the port forwarding is limited to accessed
service resp. port and corresponding IP address (Netzers IP).

Some routers support the further option to redirect to corresponding IP and
port. If you decide for different router you should check this feature.

Your other option is the professional version of the Netzer firmware, where
you can change the HTTP port.

Thank you Sven, you have clarified the situation for me. I think I may be able to work round this by changing the port of the other web server (a CCTV system) on my network to something other than 80, leaving me free to allocate port 80 to the Netzer.
Again, many thanks.
Geoff

Hi Geoff,

No need to change the port of the other servers in your network, you have to rederect the incoming traffic in your router:

Example: your CCTV system from the outside port 1000 transferred to 192.168.1.20:80 on your network.
your Netzer from the outside port 1001 transferred to 192.168.1.21:80 on your network.

When you don't have the payed version (fixed IP) you have to tell the router to use always the same IP for the Netzer.
When you inform me about the type of your router I will tell you how (if I can find the manual on the net of course).
Otherwise you will have to make a printscreen of the corresponding page. It's not difficult if you know how :-)

Kind regard, Robert.

Many thanks for your suggestion but I don't think my router (Netgear DG834v2) supports the port redirection feature. However I have now solved the problem by changing my CCTV system port, leaving port 80 available for the Netzer. Everything is now working fine.

Thanks to all for your help. I would have struggled without it!

For your router you have to make two settings:
First you have to create a firewall rule, called a custom service at Netgear (Security menu) type TCP where you have to define the portnumber, say 5000 with the name Netzer.
Afterwards you have to define an inbound service where you select make the service Netzer just made, on the first line.
Second line send to server you have to fill in the IP-address of the Netzer and on the third line you may limit acces to certain IP-adresses.  At last you may chose if you want to log the acces from outside or not.

Robert.

When you do so you may acces multiple servers from the internet with the exception that all the servers are using different ports because this router dont really understand portforwarding unlike others where you can tell which outside port will be connected to which inside port at a corresponding inside IP-adress, for instance the Fritz!box.

Addition,
Of course you have to have the payed version of the Netzer firmware where you may change the portnumber, otherwise you do need another router when you want to acces more then one server on port 80.

Robert.
