Valdis Krebs offers an excellent introduction to social network analysis (SNA) at http://www.orgnet.com/sna.html

Highly recommended!

As you probably know, Valdis and his associates June and Jack also publish the valuable blog on Network Weaving at http://www.networkweaving.com/blog/ It's highly recommended as well :-)

Thanks for sharing the link to the article by Valdis. I left a
comment, pointing to a map of the links library at ttp://tinyurl.com/23aa9w

These groups represent part of my network, but not the people in my
network, which numbers more than 15,000. What foundation(s) are
funding work in SNA and would provide the money for a group like mine
to contract with SNA consultants so we could map our network and use
it in all the ways SNA suggests is possible?

It's nice to have the help of volunteers, but as you know, volunteers
are busy people who can't always deliver service on the time schedule
that work requires. Business people take this for granted when they
can draw upon paid staff and corporate resources to produce on-time
products and services. If we can identify a funding source more non
profits might apply SNA to decision support strategies.

I think the deeper and more valuable work is to show foundations in general how SNA can be used to visualize the success of their projects in a way that mere numbers can't...and thus they request and designate money in their grants for this metric for projects. Foundations are seeking evidence that their "investments" are working. We can show them how SNA reveals that.

I think this is a "chicken and egg" issue. Which comes first? I'm not
sure foundations will provide dollars for SNA based on theory alone.
They need to see it applied in nonprofit organizations to achive the
goals of a network of organizations focused on a common goal.

However, in order to apply SNA to demonstrate the impact of the
network, funds are needed to collect the information, create the SNA
tool, use it over time, and show the benefits. This is not a short
term outcome, just as community building does not show short term
results.

SNA is just one use of information to help an organization do its
work. I've been piloting a form of journey mapping since 2000. At
http://www.tutormentorexchange.net/OHATS/Intro_OHATS.htm you can read
about this and follow links that show how we've been applying this. We
have the same lack of manpower/dollars to do this type of Journey
Mapping as we have to do SNA. However, both are intended to
demonstrate the long-term impact of groups toward common goals, which
is what funders want from their dollars.

We just need investors to support the front end part of this process.
Those investors could be located in any part of the world. Can our
network-weaver's purpose be to find and bring a few of those investors
into this discussion?

Daniel,

I like the way you put that. Do you have time to work on describing a
project to apply SNA toward improving impact in a community? And if
so, - where would you like to work?

The only way I would have time to describe the project of applying SNA
is to focus SNA toward the Tutor/Mentor Connection's mission. That's
where I've been trying to find resources to apply SNA for many years
now. If there were others who wanted to help me with this I'd
describe what I'm doing in the Tutor/Mentor page of About us, with
links to the spaces where I'm already working with other volunteers on
certain aspects of this, such as using a geographic information system
to map data, or of creating a journey mapping system to map actions
over time that are intended to demonstrate movement toward a goal.

If we can demonstrate SNA within the T/MC network, others can take
what they learn and apply the concepts and applications to their own
networks.

Sounds good, Daniel. I think haveing a practical application like this is very useful. And, you already have much of the data available in computer format.

I'd certainly be open to being a part of an effort to use SNA for this application. I'm in the process of studying SNA, so it fits right in. On the other hand, I only have a limited amount of time available. So, I can only do some work on this project.

Are there other network weavers in our group who would like to partner with us? Or, perhaps some of the T/MC volunteers would be open to doing part of the work in partnership with us. For example, much of the time cnnsuming work of Social Network Analysis (at least given my limited expertise with computer programming!) is manipulating, categorizing, and clearning up data. I could provide guidance on what was needed, but wouldn't be able to do it myself. Once the data is prepared, doing SNA is quite quick.

I'm constantly recruiting volunteers to help with tech related
projects. Is this the space where you'd recommend that I outline the
SNA goals of the Tutor/Mentor Connection:
http://www.aboutus.org/Connecting_Network_Weavers_with_Tutor/Mentor_Connection

If we can describe what we're doing and what tasks we need help on, my
recruitment of potential volunteers can point to this space.

This is perfect, Dan. I'm having some major problems with my computer access at the moment, but it hopefully will be resolved later tomorrow. Then, I can start making a few comments on the AboutUs page and start on the project. Looking forward to collaborating with you and, hopefully others.

Daniel and Habib,

I set up a discussion at wiserearth where I suggest we start working
on this:

http://www.wiserearth.org/forum/view/f375b42b560a0342a76d2365b97b5190

Daniel, what would be the first step from your point of view?

Dave, I appreciate that you set this up on Wiser Earth, but my hope
was that it would build off the Tutor/Mentor Connection page at About
Us. If we move to a different web host we have another set of log ins.
If we don't build this withing the Tutor/Metnor space, then we don't
benefit from all of the context I provide with the links to all of the
other web sites that I manage.

I don't have the time to recreate all of this in a different
discussion area.

Can't speak for David. But, I personally think it's fine to use the
AboutUs space for this purpose.

David, I agree that WiserEarth is an important resource to use. But,
there is no need for us all to use it. I think we can build the Tutor
Mentor Connection page at AboutUs, and simply use WiserEarth for doing
research and making connections. That sort of cross platform work
would be one of the services of us as Network Weavers. Another
example might be creating a Cause at Yahoo for Tutoring/Mentoring.

David, does that make sense to you?
