Welcome and Enjoy!
Valdis
We have been talking about a number of "requirements" from a web/email
discussion group. As I recall, the primary requirements were:
1. The ability to use the web as well as email (Google Groups clearly
offers this capability)
2. Not having any advertising (I don't know yet if that's true of
Google Groups -- I'll find out as soon as I get this message!)
3. Having the capability to have multiple groups at the same virtual
domain (i.e. networkweavers.net). (I'm pretty sure Google Groups
doesn't offer this capability, but we may decide that it is not
essential).
Ted and Michael, please chime in if I've forgotten something, ok?
Personally, I think that if there is no advertising on this group, we
may want to consider using it for the long-term. Having a public
group on Google may well bring in new people, rather than having them
all funnel through the Network Weavers Network. We can then invite
those new people to participate in the other Network Weavers Network
resources, such as our directory. Furthermore, I am now thinking that
we may well want to have a very public group such as this
NetworkWeaving Google Group, and also have a number of other semi-
public groups based on region (e.g. Sea...@NetworkWeavers.net), area
of focus (e.g. GlobalCli...@NetworkWeavers.net), and so on.
When we first were talking about starting a discussion list, Ted went
ahead and started one based on Mailman. My impression was Mailman
didn't offer the flexible web interface we needed. However, I
appreciated Ted's initiative in just launching into this -- and I
appreciate Jean's willingness to start and host this Google Group --
and I appreciate Valdis' gentle "nudging" to her to do so.
I'm already starting to be totally "blown away" by the potential of
what is emerging here. We've got a group of people (Network Weavers)
who, by our very nature, are inclined to not only add new people to
our network, but new resources and capabilities and dimensions.
Looking forward to growing our Network(s) with everybody. It Takes Us
All!

I suggest that, for the time being, we move forward with this group. I'd prefer if we didn't make a big public launch just yet. We're approaching an "alpha test" of our AboutUs directory, and we'll be inviting all of you to participate shortly. I'd like us to at least be in a "beta test" mode (i.e. further along!) before we launch to the world!

The questions I'd pose for the group are
a) how do we collect and organize information important to each
member, and that would be important enough to motivate a growing
number of people to visit this site to find the information
b) how do we create a growing network, and growing public awareness,
of the ideas we collect and share, so that more people are using the
ideas in more parts of the world
c) how do we use these ideas to influence the flow of resources to
places all over the world, so that the people, technology, and
experience are all in place and able to put the ideas to work
These are questions I focus on every day in my leadership of the Tutor/
Mentor Connection. I realize that unless thousands of people are
finding and using the information I collect, then the influence of
what I'm doing will be minimal. Without a big budget for information
collection and organization, or for advertising, the only way to
succeed is to innovate ways to use networks like this.
