Job Title :UNIX Systems Administrator
Location: Reston, Va

The UNIX Systems Administrator is accountable for the installation, support, maintenance, configuration and troubleshooting of the office's UNIX-based infrastructure comprising of  approximately

thirty SUN Solaris hosts.
The UNIX Systems Administrator is responsible for all UNIX systems administration.  This includes hardware maintenance and the implementation of software updates on all SUN platforms.  The

incumbent will also provide support for the remote business continuity site.
In addition, the incumbent is expected to support and administer the daily backups of those systems and should be proficient in UNIX shell scripting and/or PERL or other scripting language.
The incumbent maintains a secure UNIX environment based upon current best practices.  The incumbent will also be expected to support the ongoing monitoring of the Solaris hosts and be proactive

in resolving anomalies.
The incumbent may be called upon to assist with administration of  SAN (Storage Area Network) infrastructure, the web portal infrastructure, and all other application infrastructures residing on the

UNIX systems. 

 

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Effective administration of all UNIX systems to ensure that system resources are available to all authorized users within the Office of Finance and at the FHLBanks.
Build and maintain existing scripts to support the administration of the UNIX infrastructure. 
Timely implementation and support of application and system software upgrades to ensure a secure and effective system.
Administration of the data backup and recovery procedures for the UNIX environment.
First level review of daily system logs.
Maintain inventory of UNIX hardware and related software.
Develop and maintain up-to-date technical and user documentation.
Keep abreast of the latest technical trends.

 

PRINCIPAL JOB REQUIREMENTS
Bachelors Degree Preferred
Minimum five years' UNIX experience preferably with SUN Solaris.
Minimum two years' scripting experience preferably shell scripting or PERL.
Working knowledge of backup infrastructure and techniques, SAN concepts, Apache HTTP server
(including Stronghold), and Sybase Adaptive Server.
Exposure to other application server technology such as ColdFusion Server, Business Objects, WebLogic, JBOSS, and Tomcat is a plus.
Ability to initiate and complete assignments accurately and on time, with minimal supervision.
Ability to work effectively with vendor technical support channels.
Ability to communicate well, both orally and in writing.
Ability to analyze and solve problems independently.
