Subject: Lava Boy Needs Rescue Today!!! - Baltimore, MD

- Rescue Needed - Lava Boy: altered male, 8mo, 7.5lbs Lava Boy came to BARCS as a stray on 9/2 and is currently being treated for pain and lameness in both front legs, with his left front leg being particularly concerning. He is not bearing weight on the left front limb and is painful when the leg is touched or extended. He required sedation so that radiographs could be taken safely. The area around his left elbow has soft tissue swelling and warmth, with decreased movement of the joint in both directions. Even while sedated, Lava Boy remained painful when the elbow was manipulated.   Thankfully, no obvious broken bones were seen on his radiographs. However, a small area of abnormal bone growth was noted along the front of the left elbow joint. Because he remains painful and lame despite there being no obvious fracture, there may be an injury or damage within the joint that cannot be seen on standard X-rays.   Lava Boy needs to be rechecked in approximately 10 days. If he is still lame, additional diagnostics such as a CT scan or joint scope may be recommended to look more closely at the cartilage and other structures within the elbow. These advanced diagnostics are beyond what BARCS can provide.   Lava Boy needs a rescue able to take him out of the shelter and provide the orthopedic evaluation, advanced diagnostics, and follow-up care he may need.
