W.r.t. the ALT key + arrow bindings, it seems that there is some
collision with the X window mgr. For example, ALT + down arrow raises
a hidden window. Is this my problem? Is the window mgr trapping the
ALT left/right keypresses such that the browser never sees the events?
I can't be alone in hitting this problem. (Okay I could be...) My
question is: how to get the ALT + left/right arrow keypress events to
be (a) seen by the browser and (b) execute a forward or back command?
Some env details: Red Hat 7.1, XFree86 4.0.3, sawfish(sawmill wmgr),
gnome ...
Thanks in advance for any and all assistance!

I think it might be. Alt-arrows works for me (I'm using fvwm2).

WFM too, fvwm2 and afterstep.
The window manager will definitely get events before Mozilla will, so if
your window manager is trapping alt-arrow keys then they won't work in
mozilla.
Many X window managers let you rebind keys yourself (I know I've done
this on kde and sawfish), so you can put those functions on some other
key to let alt-arrow keys through to Mozilla.
Mozilla also lets you rebind keys, but unfortunately forward/back in
history aren't currently exposed so that you can bind them to keys
(there's a bug on that; check 77976 or 102993). See
http://www.mozilla.org/unix/customizing.html for general info on
rebinding keys.
