I don't have that group listed on my Eternal-September UseNet listing
but I do have alt.comp.software.seamonkey on that server so I'm guessing
your alt.comp.software.com might be listed.

I think it cost me about $5 to set up my account originally but has been
free since .... although I do donate about 30 Euro most years!!

I sent an E-mail to AIOE's administrator. Here is his reply --

I don't know that group.
Is that really the correct name?

You can also use solani.org or eternal-september.org with free
registration.

I don't see it listed on my listing of E-S groups .... mind you I didn't
'refresh' the list!!

I have refreshed it - still does not appear. I assume it isn't
available. Maybe ask in eternal-september.groupsrequests.

Which server do you use?
E-S and solani don't have it.

That surprises me, according to https://solani.org/technical/ one of
their servers is in NY. Then again, that information may be outdated,
the 5.10 kernel was released December 2020 although it is at least a
Long Time Support version (as is 4.19).

From what I read in another posting a good 4 days later, the recovery
times *will be* long.

The outage started around 20 days ago and I'm starting to wonder if AIOE
is ever going to recover. Who knew that a RAID controller could fail so
catastrophically?

I wonder what the exact problem is.
After the RAID controller got replaced, even if all data has been
erased, he could start over and provide the service again - it was
unauthenticated NNTP.

Additionally, a backup should exists, so the amount of data loss should
be low - only some days or so.

I think you must mean alt.comp.software.seamonkey in which case it is
available from news.solani.org (among others). You have to register an
email address.

Wait. When did ES stop being free to set up an account? I haven't used my account for years. I wonder if it still works and is still free.

I'm sure that's what it cost me fifteen or so years ago!!

Hmm!! Can't see any mention of a starter account fee on
https://www.eternal-september.org/index.php?showpage=contact&language=en
so, maybe, I'm wrong!!

I migrated there a couple of weeks after aioe went down and it cost me
around $5 less than your estimate of around $5 to set things up.
