The code for this has been landed in the tree but hasn't yet been
switched on. Is it worth releasing a try build with the code enabled so
that interested people can test it before it works its way to them
through the normal channels? (Do we even know how many people use LDAP
autocomplete?)

I would think tons of people. But not the average home and small
business users of course.

IMO can't hurt to have a try build (with a "working well" Thunderbird
daily) and publicise it for testing.

I haven't been able to compile Thunderbird myself yet, so I'd welcome a
try build I can use...

Is it "only" a matter of moving the code to toolkit interfaces and are
there no functional changes in the LDAP autocomplete?

Sadly it's not that simple; rather than tweaking the existing
autocomplete code we've gone for rewriting it in JavaScript. We've had a
basic implementation working for some time but it only filtered on a
hard-coded query; the recent change allows it to use a user-defined
query, like the current code does.

in tat case, probably even more important to have targetted testing.
Does the patch easily apply to TB 18 or TB 17 code base?

Not easily, but I don't think there are many conflicts.
