I don't understand the Firefox built-in pop-up blcoker.

I just installed Win XP after using win98SE.

IIRC, I looked at the list of pop-up excetions, in
Options/Content/Block Popup Windows (which I have checked)/exceptions
and the list was empty a day or two after I dl'd FF3.

But now it has hundreds of entries, even though I have done nothing to
put them in there.

They are ALL marked "Block", even thought I this
was a list of URL's which are NOT blocked, which are exceptions to the
block popup rule. Can someone explain this to me?

For a week or two, I got NO popups in Firefox, a real pleasure, but
lately I've been getting netflix again. I hate netflix after a year of
this and will never deal with them. Don't they know after a certain
point they antagonize custmers more than they attract them?

The obnoxious pop-up's url is
http://cdn.optmd.com/V2/62427/114221/index.html?g=Af////8=&r=www.411.com/

So far I've only gotten it at 411 but not at zap2it.com or
dictionary.com/dictionary.reference.com where I used to get it all
the time. So that's good, but I want to stop it altogether before it
infects these websites and my foot and leg.

In the exceptions table, there are 4 or 5 entires that start with cdn.
and they are all blocked. Am I supposed to put cdn.optmd.com in?
Ok, I tried that, and the only button is marked allow, and when I put
it in, it was marked allow and I don't know how to change it to block.
So I deleted the entry.

When the popup appeared, I wasn't told how to block it either. Three
choices but blocking wasn't one of them.

Thanks for any help you can give.

if you have the block popups checked, then it should be
blocking them. There is no way to "block" specific
sites; however, you can allow popups from certain
sites. So, don't add anything there, or you'll get
popups. So there should be anything there unless
you're adding them to allow.

One of the best things I've done is invest in a HOSTS
file. This will block tons of crap. You can get one
from here: http://hostsfile.mine.nu/ or from here:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm. The best
thing is they're FREE!!!!

Another thing that could be doing this is a malware or
spyware program. You should scan your system for this
crap. And its best to use 2 or 3 of them for checking,
because sometimes one won't get all the crap.

Oh, one other thing I almost forgot. Sometimes a
plugin on a website will call up a popup, so in the
address bar type in:

about:config

click OK at the message, and then look for this entry:

privacy.popups.disable_from_plugins

once found, double click on it and change the number to
a 2.

Also, some sites have javascript that creates popups when you
click on UI stuff. For example, snopes.com will throw up two
popups when you click in the search terms box, even when
Firefox's popup blocker is on with zero exceptions.

sorry to say, but I don't get popups there. I'm got
block popups turned on, disabled plugins, a good hosts
file, and I also have *javascripts turned on*, and I
just don't get any popups.

That's interesting. I just brought up www.snopes.com in a new
window. I have Firefox popup blocking enabled, and in the main
snopes window Firefox said it prevented two popups. As soon as I
clicked on the search term box, two windows came up, one an add
for Netflix, and the other an ad for TheFutonCritic.com. If I
repeat the exercise without shutting down Firefox, no popups
happen.

thats because its contained within a cookie that you've
viewed the popups, so it won't display again. Atleast
thats the way I understand it.

That would make sense why it displays them once but not again.

So what does it mean that it has hundreds of entries and they are all
marked Block? Who blocked them? Could it have been when I installed
Spybot S-D?

Or could block really mean allow, since the whole panel is for the
purpose of allowing exceptions the pop-up blocker.?

They seem a bit like competitors. Should I pick one and stick to it?

I brought up those links just now.

OK, I dl'd one and was installing it when I got a box that said I
already had a file by the same name in the etc folder. It was date
May 26 and I looked and saw that I had installed Spybot S-D about an
hour before the time and date on the Hosts file.

But AHA, it's only 1/9th the size of the one I downloaded. It was a
sample hosts file, supplied by Spybot. 300K instead of 2.7 meg which
is what I dl'd.

I forgot to say that the one I dl'd didn't have the cdn.optmd.com that
was bothering me, so I edited the file and put that line in.

So I guess I'm in good shape now! Thanks a lot. BTW, I"d heard of a
HOSTS file before but didn't know what it was.

Wow, there is one there labeled ...backup from 2001 that is only 74
bytes. That must have been the "sample" hosts file that XP provided,
that Spybot renamed backup.

>Another thing that could be doing this is a malware or

I have Spybot S-D and the spyware part ran on schedule just yesterday.
I also ran it once before. The first time it deleted two or three
things and marked one thing as dangerous or something. That was just
an icon on the desktop that called up Burn4Free.exe, which is a free
CD burning utility. I think I used it in win98 a year ago, but have
no need to burn CDs since then. Why does it think this is spyware?
Is it?

The first time I checked "Permit it to remain one time" and it found
it again yesterday. Again I checked "permit it to remain one time".
I suppose I could delete the desktop icon, but the program would still
be there and it didn't complain about that!

>And its best to use 2 or 3 of them for checking,

I'll work on that.

Thanks. It was already a 2.

It's good to know abou this. I think I used to have to close Firefox
or Netscape and find some .ls or .prf file or something and edit it by
hand. (I think that was because I wanted Netscape to call up eudora
when I clicked on certain email links, but other times I wanted it to
stay within Netscape. It worked that way to begin with but then it
stopped, and I was able to get it back the way I wanted, but it kept
reverting over the years. :) But I guess since I only have Eudora
now, this is not an issue anymore. )

Thanks a lot for all your help.

and if you get the HOSTS file I mentioned, then you
wouldn't even get a popup block notification cause it
would be blocked by the hosts file before its even
downloaded and blocked by the FF blocker. And, it also
blocks those crap cookies. I wouldn't be without my
hosts file.

are we talking about the same thing: Tools, Options,
Content, then the first Exceptions button for "Block
pop-up windows." When I look there, all I have is an
Allow button. I see no block.

If I look at the next exceptions button for Images,
then I see Allow and Block buttons. Are you looking at
that?

If not, then perhaps you have an advanced popup blocker
addon. What addons do you have?

I don't think SD would do that, atleast it hasn't for mine.

when you've become an expert at it, then you can learn
the other side of hosts files. Now you only know about
how to block sites. The other side of the hosts files
is how to access websites faster.

I don't know. You'll have to find a spybot support
forum and ask them. They're around somewhere.

We're talking about the same screen, but I'm talking not about the
button but about the empty white box below that, which in my case now
has hundreds of lines, with www.adfadf.adfadf in the left column and
"Block" in the right column, for every line.

I too only have an Allow button, so when I tried to put an entry in,
it had Allow in the right column, not Block, and I tried the left
mouse button and I couldn't find anyway to turn Allow into Block.

These entries must have been put in by Spybot S-D and I have to think
they do block these sites. Several of them began with cdn. , the same
first 3 letters as the url that was displaying the netflix ad. Hmmm,
looking at the box again, I have a pretty good recollection of the
entries in the 350K Host file that Spybot must have installed and the
cdn. and cdn2. entries seem to be there. But not the entry I added
manually to the new hosts file. I should go open the file and compare
them directly but it's 1:30 and I'm pooping out. But I think Spybot
installed the file in this box, and the entries in this box probably
exists in a file somewhere, and if they're not encrypted or packed (a
mainframe term, I think) I could put an entry in as Allow and then
edit the file to make it Block.

Is there a one-step way to search all my files for the ones that were
updated most recently, without going through every folder. Then I
could add an entry and identify the file. Well it's probably in the
Firefox folders so I could do that anyhow.

Or just put the line in while editing. But since I have the hosts
file you recommended, I don't think there is a need.

Nope.

I don't know if I have add-ons or not. I don't think so. I was
thinking of getting Auto-pager.

For extensions I have pdf-download, image zoom, Move media player 7,
AVG Safe Search, AVG tool bar (but I set the FF view so I don't see
it, but it still seems to function.) , and Real Player browser Record
plug-in.

Like I say, the time on it was an hour after the directories for SD
were created. Perhaps after I rebootted it did this. Oh I forgot, in
comments at the top of the hosts file, it specificaly said Spybot S-D,
etc. So it definitely did for me. And it added the .backup to the one
line hosts file that was there before. There's probably a comment in
that saying to create a hosts file. I might have read it in win98.

I tried this before I did anything else. Now I know I only had the
300K sample hosts file that Spybot installs. (wouldn't it be better to
tell me to go get my own full-size hosts file than to install a mini
one and say no more about it? )

I didn't get anything there except the first time I went from the home
page to one of the choices a cream colored bar came up at the top of
the main pane and said "Firefox has blocked.... " I wasn't looking at
it and first and couldn't read the rest, so I don't know how it was
phrased, but I guess it worked. The bar disappeared after a second or
two and didn't reappear when I went back to the home page and tried
another choice. Did I mention for the record I'm using Firefox 3?

Okay, I closed FF and did that hosts stuff and I reopened FF and did
the snopes thing again and I got no popup and also no cream colored
bar. But I havent' rebooted windows yet, so I'll try again tomorrow.

>popups when you click in the search terms box, even when

With win98SE, 98% of popups came from zap2it.com ** and
dictionary.com, but not 411.com. With XP, so far, it's only 411.com,
and they have all been Netflix (be damned). I'm not sure if that mkes
it more likely or less likely that it's what you say here. Is there
something I can do about it if it is? other than the HOSTS file, which
I'm working on now.

Okay the hosts file is in so I guess I'm find for the foreseeable
future. Nope I'm not. It's going very slow so I have to do that
workaround that both of the urls that Peter Potamus gave me described.
So slow some of the tabs haven't filled yet. (Though that's happened a
couple times before.) Ok, I did the workaround and it seems fine now.

Great!!

**Which is like tv guide, gives tv program listings. It's very good
and you don't even have to register anymore.

Thaks all.

for some reason, the Moz people decided to call

LOL. They must know the King's English better than I do.

After a couple days of using the first one, I feel obliged to report
that it keeps rejecting sites that I want.

The HOSTS file I got off the web with 80,000 entries (iiuc) kept
interfering with sites I wanted and which weren't a problem afaik.

Like bizrate.com, highbeam.com, freewebs.com .

I have AVG and Spybot S&D and neither alerted when I went to these
three sites. I figure they're good.

Have you heard that some of those at Guantanamo were not terrorists at
all, not arrested on the battlefield, and may have been turned in by
personal enemies, for personal reasons, nothing to do with war?

I wonder if that sort of thing happens with one or more of these hosts
files. Do the folks who keep them claim to verify that each page is
bad? IIRC one said he didn't.

My friend and I have both used bizrate with no problem.

Highbeam is an archive of newspapers, etc. It says it has 60 million
articles in 3,500 credible publications. You can see the first
paragraph or so for free. The one I looked at after I took out the
highbeam entry from my hosts file was good. It's hard to believe it
has malware, because they went to so much effort to make it look like
it has newspapers, and because after 1 or more free ones, they charge
for them. I didn't use it because the first paragraph was enough to
let me know it wasn't what I needed.

The freewebs page was commercial, but that's what I was looking for.

close FF, then open the hosts file and you can do one
of two things:

Put a # and a few spaces in front of the entry you
want, eg: # 127.0.0.1 bizrate.com

or remove the entry. Restart FF and try again.
