On my parent's computers, the preference "keyword.URL" keeps getting
hijacked by third party programs. I don't have direct control over
their machines, but both they and I know what string they want to be
the default search in keyword.URL.

Given all of that, is there any way to "lock" keyword.URL, so that it
can only be changed directly by a real user, and never by a third
party program?

I could be wrong on this, but put the entry you want
into your user.js file. If the entry is changed, it
gets changed in prefs.js, then all you have to do is
restart the program, and it resets itself, because the
user.js file is read into the prefs.js file. In other
words, any entry in the user.js file take precedent
over the pref.js file.
