3.5.3 upgrade/Install completed sucessfully and failed miserably.............

CPU chip: AMD 2000+ XP (1.63Ghz compared to intel)
OS: XP Pro SP2
Firefox 3.5.2 (rolled back, sorta; or downgraded, or whatever)

I waited this long to upgrade from 3.5.2 to 3.5.3 (Official site download)
and when the upgrade/install ran, it reported a successful completion but
at "Finish" did not bring up the new, improved Firefox and the icons no
longer worked -- did not even give error messages. Neither did it get a
response form firefox.exe clicked in "my computer", though it did
recognize it as a valid .exe. Neither did I get a response from an MS-DOS
emulation and "start firefox". Using an ancient .exe opening tool, I did
finally get the "Firefox has crashed restart/cancel" dialogue box. I
tried 'restart' and the message was repetitive. I re-downloaded it again
from the official site, reinstalled it, rebooted the machine, all to no
avail.

I went to the web and finally found a download for 3.5.2, dl'd it,
installed it and it works fine -- well as good as it did before this mess
started.............

Any ideas? Is this a "known" problem of some kind?
