An interesting story, about crash, failure, and upgrade

One that has nothing to do with the problem in the adjoining post.
I'm back in win98SE using FF2, and because in XP, I could open 60 or
70 tabs with no problme, it's hard to get back to only opening 10 or
20. (This is the same computer with the same cpu and ram, so XP has
at least one advantage!)
So sometimes FF2 freezes, or crashes. If a program closes on its own,
sometimes I can just restart it. FF is like that often.
So one time when it freezes or crashes, I try to restart it from the
quicklaunch bar, and iirc the icon won't even depress. So I go to the
desktop and double click there, and nothing happens. So I look in
properties to verify where the program is and using an Windows
Explorer replacement, I go to the firefox.exe entry and click there,
and nothing happens.
So I reboot and do the same things, and nothing happens.
Well, FF2 was in the firefox2 folder, and I figured I could use
Firefox 1 for a while. So I go up one folder and fine firefox.exe and
click on it, and it starts, and it soon says it's going to update (and
I figured a little update) but when it was done, it was now FireFox2.
Now iirc FF! wouldn't upgrade to FF2. One had to dl FF2 himself, and
after that FF2 would automatically upgrade when upgrades came out.
But it seems they've changed that, and it became FF2 along with all
the bookmarks and afaict everything else, and it's been working fine
for a month or more since.
A) Why did a perfectly good program stop working, so much that it gave
no error message when it or an shortcut was clicked on?
B) When did they allow FF1 to automatically upgrade to FF2?

A) yeah, FF has a very crappy restart problem. It was
a huge known problem. So, bring up the task manager
[ctrl+alt+del] and look in there and see if FF is still
running. If it is, end it, and now try starting FF
again. Did this help? If it still doesn't work, then
look in your FF profile for a file called parent.lock.
Once found, delete it. Now try starting FF.
B) as far as I can remember, no. You had to manually
download FF2. Its just like FF2 can't update to FF3.

my error, you can go from FF2 to FF3 automatically, but
I'm pretty sure you can't go from FF1 to FF2. I'm sure
you have to download it.

Right. But it upgraded for me. At least I think so.
