Google Maps keyboard focus problem in Firefox

I'm running Firefox 87 on an Xubuntu 20.04 system, but these problems, which have persisted for quite a while, seem to also occur on Windows.

When I access Google Maps, you are supposed to be able to use "+" [actually "="] and "-" to zoom in and out of the maps. (See the shortcut help menu by typing Ctrl-/ in Maps.) However, Firefox preempts these keys and treats them as normal text. As soon as you press either key, the find/search box pops up from the bottom and treats the +, =, or - as a search term and the map display remains as is. Now, I've discovered that Alt-Shift-"=" and Alt-Shift-"-" seem to work for zooming.

It's a pain, but I can live with this solution. However the bigger problem is that the Maps page does not typically appear to have keyboard focus, so typing these sequences, or trying to use the arrow keys to move around does not work until you mess around quite a bit and finally get the page to "see" the keystrokes. Then the <ESC> zoom sequences or the arrow keys start working.

I'm looking for any insights as to how I can reliably get the maps page to have keyboard focus -- preferably all of the time. Is there some internal Firefox setting(s) that can alter the default behavior and return more focus to the actual map?

Thanks for any pointers.
