First, I apologize for the cross-posting, but I do not know if the problem I am having is a Win98 problem or a Netscape problem. Basically, here it is, in a nutshell:
I got my uncle a one-year subscription to cable Internet access (he was using dial-up). It runs fine, but it seems that when he opens up Netscape, the Internet Auto-Dial comes up, prompting him to dial out. If he hots "Cancel", then there's no problem; a page is brought up. It's just annoying for him to have to hit "Cancel" all the time.
I went to Control Panel, and into the "Internet" settings. On the Connection tab, sure enough, it had "Connect to the Internet using a modem" chosen. I changed it to "Connect to Internet using a LAN", clicked "Apply", then "OK". Closed everything, rebooted the computer, and started Netscape. The Internet Auto-Dial box came up again. Checking again in the Internet settings in Control Panel, it had switched back to "Connect using a modem". No matter how many times I changed it to "Connect using a LAN",
it keeps switching back to the modem setting, and of course prompting to dial out to the Internet.
Completely uninstalling DUN has had no effect either.
He uses Netscape for his mail in addition to web browsing. Unfortunately, i flew back home last night, so I'm 3,000 miles away from his computer, though I can prolly get into it via VNC. I know there is a registry hack i can do that should turn the auto-dial off, but I'd rather avoid that, if possible.
If anyone has any other ideas, I'd appreciate it. like I said, I do not know if the culprit here is Netscape or Win98. I have thought about uninstalling Netscape, then re-installing it, but I'd like to do that almost as a last resort.
Thanx, in advance, for your help.
