Under the old browsers, ie: < 6.0, the Java classes reside on...
C:\Program Files\Netscape\Communicator\Program\java\classes
in a file called java40.jar. This file has not changed since somewhere
around 98,
when some unnamed Monopoly forced NS to lay off all their Java programers as
the result
of "Having their financial air supply cut off [sic]" Thus there is no
difference
between the jar versions after 4.05...

I had to wipe the dust off this link :)
Different versions of the JDK for the old 4x browsers are here.
http://developer.netscape.com:80/software/jdk/download.html

*** Note Just in case there are issues, be sure to BACKUP your
C:\Program Files\Netscape\Communicator\Program\java\classes
directory so you can restore it.. If you install the wrong version,
smartupdate will crash if you try and update Navigator.

The old versions ie: < 4.78 the <APPLET> tag would call the
C:\Program Files\Netscape\Communicator\Program\java\classes\java40.jar

JVM which was JDK1.1.5. This behavior now changes if you install the
Plugin.

(This may actually be a result of changes to JDK1.3_1 as outlined in its
release
notes; I skipped that version)

Ultimately you should install the Plugin. Not only does it run the same on

NS and IE, but it runs at 3X the speed and is much more stable.
Good Luck!
Sincerely:
