real world performance advice needed

We are getting ready to develop a GUI application to run on Mac and PC
desktop computers, which will include 3D graphics rendering and database
integration. Our biggest concern is performance speed. Is version 1.3
fast enough to handle the whole application, or should we still plan to
develop the application in native code for each platform, and have a
Java GUI to maintain a consistent appearance? We'd rather hear from some
real world experience instead of depending on benchmark tests.
