Missing authentication string

Hello,

I cannot login to my server with a user name, where the FIRST character
is an accented French character, on a French Netscape 4.7 [fr] 19990909
browser via HTTP running on a French Windows NT. This is because the
authentication-string is missing from HTTP Authentication header using
the BASIC authentication scheme. One interesting thing is that, this is
NOT an issue as long as the first character of the user name is NOT an
accented character.

Any ideas?
