Additionally, we need users who go to an ssl area of the site via http
to be redirected to https.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Two server instances.
One instance running on port 80, without SSL.
Sounds like you already have this.
Second instance running on port 443, with SSL.
Two separate document roots. One for each instance.
Switching from one to the other is as simple as putting http or https in
the links on your web pages.

We have a similar problem but the two-instances solution won't help us
since we need to share in-memory data cache between the HTTP and HTTPS
requests.
Is there a way to share the same process between the two ports (and
protocols)?
