Hey guys,

I think that a tournament is the best way for bringing Netrek back
from the dead. And modernizing the viewing experience so that outside
people can get an idea of what this is all about is important. People
are big into "esports" now days but they have forgotten what community
paved the way for all of that.

So what I would like to do is to host a Netrek Tournament. I will be
casting this on TwitchTV and I'm going to ask my boss for some prize
money so there is something on the line (maybe a hundred bucks or so
if I'm lucky...I also can reach out to ESL to see if they would be
interested in showing the game on that site which could get thousands
of viewers...)

What I need from everyone else is...
1) at least 16 people who can form teams and 100% make the scheduled
event time. (also I'll have 1 practice run to test the stream)(if we
get more, instead of a showmatch we can do a real tourney) 80/20 split
seems fair for the prize money, paid via Paypal.

2) An idea of if we can get some sort of real observing system. I've
mostly used COW but I'm short a linux box and streaming from linux is
a bit hard right now. I'm using NetrekXP right now but it seems like
the "team" limitation is still there... Is their any way to observe
the entire game state? Also MacTrek seems a bit more pretty for
viewers.. ideas here would help...

3) A server to do this on. (I can set up one myself and I may have to
set up one myself if I need to code up some better observing UI and
cannot get another server to bless the new client)

Are you guys game?

That's the minimum of what I would need.. I could also use people to
help with graphics and promotion from netrek.org guys. Do we know who
owns @netrek ?

If we get some commitments I'm thinking that we could run this
probably near the end of April or early May.

I personally think it is worth one last shot... I remember the glory
days... (2002 draft was my last draft, team DS)... there is a very
small chance that an event like this could breathe a spark of life
back into the scene.

Let me know what you think!

A tournament might lure back some old clue.

Wow, that would be awesome.

I can definitely commit.

You could stream as an observer, but to see the action from different
perspectives you'd have to click on the ship you're
interested in watching at the time, that is something that can be done
though. Also an observer can only observe one team at a time, so maybe
have two observers streaming so viewers can watch both teams on the
tactical.

I can provide a server if no one else steps up.

Definitely!

For some small value of 'awesome' I guess. What will happen is it will
be, if anything, a twink fest for the most part with a small handful of
talent showing up.

Part of the problem will be fielding two full teams plus 1 or 2
alternates.

And the existing clue.netrek.org (primary) and b.clue.netrek.org
(secondary) are no good... why?

Sven hasn't owned it for a year or two now; tanner does.

Depending on scheduling, I´d likely be up for it, and definitely think
if it´s going to be done, it should be on clue.netrek.org . I can´t
really claim to be clue, but I´m at least good enough to play SC and
not make a complete idiot of myself ;).

That's my hope... ;) Anyway this is more of a showcase than displaying
the absolute pinnacle of netrek.

Yeah, viewers would translate into players.. people like free
games... ;)

Yeah that's my real problem. Good observing is critical to making this
work. I don't have any problem clicking on ships and following but if
I needed 2 clients I'd have to decide what view to show... I'm going
to do some preliminary coding to see if I can get a client and server
setup that will allow for real observing from a caster's perspective.
So I may not be able to run this on a vanilla server.

> I can provide a server if no one else steps up.

Yeah I can also use my throwaway AWS for it as well but I'm glad there
are other options!

I'll keep posting on this while I do my preliminary work to see if
this is going to be possible.

Thanks for the feedback!

That's ok. Hype goes a long way in making a game enjoyable to
watch... ;)

Yeah since no real teams exist anymore I don't expect the glory day's
of the 90's to return. It will be awesome in the fact that people will
be watching Netrek and playing netrek.

> Part of the problem will be fielding two full teams plus 1 or 2
> alternates.

Yep. It is one of the largest problems behind observing mode. But if I
can get like 8 or so and they get a friend or 2, (even friends with
low clue), that would be enough for me to go forward.

> And the existing clue.netrek.org (primary) and b.clue.netrek.org
> (secondary) are no good... why?

Probably due to the observing mode. Netrek had separate observing
streams to prevent cheating. With a tourney this small that's less of
an issue. What I really will need is a server that is ok with a muxed
stream and a client that is capable of doing proper observation.

> Sven hasn't owned it for a year or two now; tanner does.

Thanks! Do you know Tanner's email address?

Yeah I'll be scheduling this far in advance. I'd like to hit a target
of Mid to late May but that will depend on observing mode upgrades and
players.

Thanks for your interest, I'm adding you to the list. I'll probably
start some little mailing list for people involved.

If this *actually* happens this time, then I'll be willing to take part
in it. Which, therefore, means I have to de-rust myself, but meh. I
would like to see more people on pickled, so I can actually have someone
to compete against than stupid bots which I can crush with ease even
being rusty.

I don't really think that this will have as huge of an impact as you all
are expecting, but if you go through and email or otherwise contact
every_single_clue_that_has_ever_played and tell them that we're going to
have a tournament, they might come. Which means: Get to work on doing
that. Now.

Hello,

Things are moving forward on the sponsorship from TwitchTV. I have
confirmation of prize money, front page promotion, and newsletter
promotion.

I'm also working on getting an observer mode for the server built so I
can do some actual castable observation. Once I test that and get the
players/teams locked down I can get a firm date and then I can
announce the prize money.

As far as impact goes, we will have to see. Honestly TwitchTV gets
10's of millions of hits a month and the front page can drive
thousands to a stream. Along with a newsletter mention and some reddit
magic, I think we have a shot of pumping some real life into the
tournament viewing.

As for players, I just need to field 2 teams at the minimum. If we get
that, we do it as a showmatch, if we get a lot more, we can think of a
real tournament structure. Feelers are already out there. If you are
committing, that would bring us up to at least 3 confirmed players and
another 10 or so unconfirmed but likely.

I think you guys are worrying a bit too much about the quality of the
games. :) This tourney is to breathe life into the game, not show the
absolute best game we have ever witnessed. We need more players and
more people to get back into shape for that. This is about showing
what FUN netrek can be to a whole new audience. Netrek doesn't have a
cost issue, it doesn't have a fun issue, it's main two issues are a
lack of people caring about the game and MAYBE a bit of a graphics
issue (though this doesn't really matter honestly and more players
will mean more coders/graphic artists...)

I've created the following social media around this.

http://www.twitch.tv/netrek
^ This is where the cast will happen... If you don't have a TwitchTV
account, please make one and "follow" the channel. It also has a chat
channel that will be active tomorrow.. (and an irc bridge if you are
interested in it... More info on the exact location after the TwitchTV
servers restart tonight)

http://www.facebook.com/Netrek
http://www.youtube.com/user/netrektourney
http://twitter.com/#!/netrektourney

Graphics and info will come in the following week or so... (I would
LOVE help with that if any of you are so inclined or have friends that
are inclined, otherwise you get what I can make... ;)

Netrek/Empire is 40 this year... lets give her a birthday she won't
forget!

Spread the word!

Feel free to schedule some pick up games. I'll have a public demo game or two after I get the observing part done.

Everything is still looking good. Funding secured, so now on to observing work, then rules and player/team finalizations.

Thanks for all the interest all! Everything is looking excellent!

Hello!

We are still looking for people. I am starting to get a large list but we absolutely need to have enough to run the event. Please let me know if you are interested or if you know someone that may be interested.

I'm working on a way of observing the game. I've obtained some sponsorship and more importantly promotion. To be explicit, no one is going to make any money on this event besides the players themselves. All the sponsors really just think the idea of bringing Netrek into the modern streaming age is cool. With the promotion I have, I expect at least a few hundred people to watch the tournament and maybe over 1000 if we get super lucky.

Everything is moving along very well and I'm hoping to have more announcements in the next week.

Development has meant that I haven't had as much time to hop on to servers to chat but to all that I've chatted with there, thanks!

Please let me know if you have any ability to play or help!

Thanks!

Ooh I suppose I could be dragged into playing my favorite game of all time. If you need me, count me in!

BTW, who do you have doing streamcasting? It might be nice for the audience to have a knowledgable commentator. I got into watching Starcraft II streams a bit (and even watched it live in Seoul) and know how commentators can really add to the viewing experience. Another cool idea is to have a player on standby -- I remember hockey all-star games where a player was mic'ed. (And a potential problem could be if streamcasters give away movements of opposing cloakers to players who are listening in, assuming it is done live.)

Sounds great!

I'll be the one casting this. I played in some of the draft seasons and have played netrek on and off for a good decade and a half. I also did a lot of SC2 casting for the scReddit crowd. It won't be the absolute highest level of commentary but I aim to keep it exciting and also very newbie friendly. For 90% of the viewership this will be the first time they have ever seen the game so I'll have to keep re-explaining the rules and keeping it lively.

There is the possibility of a co-caster but I'll probably want all the high level people in the game. :)

As far as cheating, I have a few options...
1) Stream from delay. I can have the stream on a few minutes of delay.
2) Trust.

I'll probably go with option 1.
