The issue with using non web standard formats is the visitor must have the
proper player installed on their computer to see your content.

Many visitors do not even have flash player or sun java installed much less
something that can handle the avi format.
Converting the file to flash format (swf) would be the safest way to deliver
content.
Most people choose to create a youtube account, upload their video there,
and use the youtube coding to play the file from their web page. You may
want to look into this rather than serving video from your hosting account.
