I am fed up with my hosting service... Dreamhost.com....

can anyone suggest a few alternatives?

my requirements are:

generous transfer rates
generous storage space
min of 10 pop3 emails
smtp server - I want my mail to go thru my domain, not my connection ISP.
PHP with GD and ImageMagick
Perl, CGI
my own CGI-BIN
a godo stats package
web based admin panel
MySql
canned formmail, counters, etc...

and most of all...

telephone support ... preferabbly 24 hours
fast connection to the internet.. preferabbly multiple OCs.

any suggestions?

Hi Mark,

www.futurequest.net

It doesn't meet all of your requirements, but their service and support is
bar none the best I've encountered. I've been with them for almost 3.5
years. Prior I was a serial hoster as I could never find good service. I'm
picky.

Have a read through their forums. That's what did it for me.

Cheers,

David

I use 1&1 Internet - I'm UK based. They are a German company - I don't know
where you are or if they will host you if you are in the US (although I
can't really see why not, apart from phone support access...) They have a UK
number for free support on their top package.

After a half-dozen or so losers, I'm using these two and have been really,
really pleased with everything, ESPECIALLY in support:

I agree completely with Ian about www.oneandone.co.uk , they offer a good
range of packages with good support and very detailed logs, I changed to
streaming audio from mp3 downloads on my site based on the information
contained in the (free) log. Another big plus is the free software they give
you with packages....NOF7 free, WS-FTP free, Star office free, and on and on
and on and on......but that assumes they will send you the disk it all comes
on IF you are not in the UK...check them out anyway as you have nothing to
lose.

That's a good term -- serial hoster. I was never happy letting others
host the bitmotion.com site, so why not set up a dedicated server for
it? That arrangement has worked out very well and has allowed for
hosting of other companies sites as well to offset the costs.

Well, it's worth a try - if you decide to have look at 1&1 - click on the
1&1 logo on my site's front page and if you decide to go with them - you
will earn me some commission :)

After extensive research for the best place to become a reseller and move
all
my clients I've happily settled at Page-Zone. Jim (the owner) is active on
several
newsgroups and extremely responsive to customer needs. They offer more
features
for less money with terrific service. I've had no problems so far. I just
signed up
as an affiliate so if you check 'em out via this link and decide to use them
anytime in
the next year, I get a tiny commission:

Good luck in your search & thank you!

Mind if I stick my nose in this one.
I'm with a company now called edatarack. Been with them for the past 6
months. There $35 for a year and have a pretty good selection of features,
including 200 megs. For the most part they'll even email you when they plan
to do maintainance that could keep your site down for a short while. It's
not often, but it's nice to get notified. Check them out:

I like lunarpages.com

lots of space (300 Mb), bandwidth (20 GB), lots of presets for
you -formmail, phpbb, phpchat, webstats are set up for you in their online
web control panel. Unlimited email addresses with auto config to outlook
express, php, python, perl, your own cgi-bin, mysql, subdomains, shopping
card, custom error pages, real media compatible, imagemagik etc -all or
$7.95/month
hard to beat i think. Whatever you do stay away from Freeservers paid
services -ugh!

www.lunarpages.com
is superior for high-end users. They transfer as much control as
possible to the user, which is really a LOT. You can do almost
anything. And the 60GB bandwidth is really needed.

I started my site on another provider, but found that their cost /
bandwidth would drive heavy costs.

After changing to lunarpages, I have been nothing but happy.

I want to thank you for pointing me to hostingmatters.com!

I have transfered my personal domain to them... they offer great prices
and features! Nice reseller program too!

The main reason I switch was because of downtime and terrible support
from dreamhost.com ... STAY AWAY FROM DREAMHOST!

The support from hostingmatters is great! I email the NOC and get a reply
within 15 minutes.

I post to the support forum and get replies almost instantly.

The only minor fault is no telephone support.... but I have a feeling if
things coudl not get handled via email, I could request they call me and
most likely they would.

thanks again for the lead!

Mark:

The folks that frequent the board are fanatics...as are the owners of
HostingMatters. While no phone support, they seem to be there all the
time...and you can frequently get them via ICQ. I've been in an ICQ chat
with Annette there on a problem at 3 in the morning, working it through. I
simply tried their chat room one morning and there she was! Not only are
they responsive, they are innovative and really keep up with things.
